We have more Top 10 kids on our list than ever beforehand.
The list is ok, with need for improvement.
The problem is we haven't been able to play those good players together.
That will change, probably by next year.
Logue, Brayshaw, Serong, Cerra, Young, Chapman, Darcy, Henry, Fred all playing in the same team at the same time is plenty of talent.
Just need to get the mid range around this core, and the future will take care of itself
Need some proper reliable keys in that mix. It was the Pav and McPharlin bookends that really held the side up in the times we were good, and we've been dealing with the aftermath of their retirements/declines since. Obviously that was the thinking behind Hogan, which didn't pan out.

I was surprised at the optimism pre-season, as I have been every year since the 2014 round 3 game against Hawthorn where I went to the MCG in the hope we'd atone for the previous year and instead we got murdered. Very apparent in that game that Lyon had wrung the best he could out of the side in 2012-13.

We simply don't have the talent and haven't for a long while. The club spent the latter half of Ross Lyon's contract in denial about where the list was at.
I was bullish about this year. We grew in 2020, we're at least five years into a rebuild, we had an easy draw. In retrospect I underestimated the effect that delisting or trading four forwards, and bringing in one rookie forward, would have on a team already struggling to kick goals.
Stupid me

I paid little attention to what was going on off field or post season last year, too many other things for me to care about, but when I heard Hogan was being traded I was shocked and dismayed. I still don't really know why that happened but it put us squarely on the back foot again.

I think peeps need to listen to the pod.

“I have a problem with the ongoing treatment of Fremantle as a basket case.”
That’s what Duff is arguing against.
I listened. He said we are either way ahead of ourselves or completely maudlin and the derby put us in the latter.

I agree. Fans wildy overestimate their side (all clubs, its tribal to think you're special) and Freo fans especially this year, totally overreact to a loss.

what about 11 losses in a row tho
Yeah it sucks, but there isn't inherently special about that. The significance is fan made. All the laws of physics still apply and under those, the Eagles are a far better side than us.

There are probably 4 or 5 teams that haven't beaten the Eagles in Perth in their last 11+ tries (in the same way they haven't won at KP since forever). We only stand out because we ONLY play them in Perth and do it twice a year (bar 2020).

Kane Cornes nails this piece in his defence of Serong against Merrett. So good. He is right up there now with my favourite journalists. View attachment 1132990

Kane Cornes seemed to get his name out there as a journalist by saying stupid sh*te but in the last year or so he’s actually been pretty good imo. Not exactly a competitive field, especially for ex players but still.

Gaelic footy. Great skills but sook
about tackling when playing the hybrid game against Aus.
Different type of game to be fair. More based on speed and creating overlaps through opposition traffic than AFL footy. A player like Adam Saad, Nathan Wilson, would make excellent Gaelic players as would the best onballers like Fyfe, dusty Dangerfield etc, while in contrast the likes of Natanui or Sean Darcy or even those lumbering KPF like Tom Lynch would look stupid at the highest level of Gaelic football. There’s plenty of textbook hip/shoulders in Gaelic too which require a fair bit of timing and skill to execute properly.

Check out 0:15 here for a good test of a hurlers shinbone 😂😂
If you want an example of a proper soft game, look no further than professional soccer, the worlds most popular sport.
