One catagory.... the biggest waste of talent... a flushed gift ... taken too early , gone too soon.. Why do so many talented people seem to be on a journey of self destruction.

I thought it would have been impossible to surpass the likes of Joplin , Lennon , Morrison , Hendrix and so many others ... but boy this waste of talent would have to be close to it... what a voice.

Amy burned too bright to last too long..

Probably not bew born but for me ...this is certainly in nappies. Id heard the song of course , and saw a cover on spicks and specks... but I do think the colour coordination in the video is sharp and distinctive. Typical of a lot of music ..one can get a very different feel from the music than the words.

and then have you ever seen a youtube vid ...and thought , lucky mongrels, I loved to have been there...

I know the OutKast one well; great video and that song was Everywhere when it was big .. I’m at work at the minute but I’ll try to remember to check out the Paul & Dan Kelly clip later; love Paul, not too familiar with Dan …

ooh there was something on tv about AW the other night, it was fascinating (and heartbreaking) - there was footage of her performing a take (surely the definitive take!) of Back to Black in the studio and it was absolute magic; incredible character and control to her voice - the way it was told in the doco she basically wrote the lyrics (which are more than decent) on-the-go in the studio … I never really appreciated her while she was still around but take all the tragedy and controversy away and there was immense talent there.

We all know the song... I was just thinking more in experience. How great would it be to be on a tram and that happens. The draw back is ..one probably would not want to get off

Sometimes one looks at these big events in retrospect... and superficially think what would t ahve been like to be there. Whether it was Woodstock or the local version Sunbury , whether it was Aids live or even the Freddie mercury tribute concert ... Im sure great experiences.. but how intimate would it be on the tram.

Another unfortunate member of the 27 club - too many talented folk in that club

There is a quote by Gene Symonds .... walk amongst the natives by day but in your heart be superman.

Is the 27 thing the equivalent of the nuff winning tattslotto and blowing it ... it seems to me that you need to be slightly demented and believe yourself to be worthy of superiority. Some have it breed into them , like trump , but others , its just in them. I guess as the Hooks sang... Ego is not a dirty word.

Don't know how Lennon's a waste.

The others either overdosed or killed themselves.

Lennon was murdered.

Gone too soon.... , and that he made it to 40 and produced DouFant then to go , taken too early applies in my mind but that he survived to 40 was either constitution or luck. Some of the crap that he did.. he could have easily been on the ultimate self harm list.

Harvest Moon is just wonderful.

btw, Turbocat Vdubs and whoever may be interested, this one was released just recently, might appeal to some:

A revisionist look at it... History is written by the winner they say ... and those with a pen. Not wrong or right just written from their memory of their POV.

This is the one I look forward to ...

No - I'm back out of the circle, aren't I? :'(

I'm not not into any of those artists, I just don't really know them beyond a few songs here and there for each - I've been meaning to check out Steely Dan a little bit, I'm not entirely sure it's my thing but my old man was raving to me about one of their albums a little while ago and I did like the song or two that I listened to - pretty sure they album was 'Nightfly'. I have a massive Dylan blindspot that I am unlikely to address this late in proceedings; he is so revered that I am happy to accept fault for my lack of appreciation/investigation.

I love a lot of that 60's Motown and Stax/Volt type of soul and rhythm and blues.

I love a lot of late 70s/early 80s stuff; huge Talking Heads fan.

I quite like a lot of African stuff, Fela, King Sunny Ade, Ali Farka Toure - in fact music from other cultures in general is pretty interesting imo.

I still try to keep a toe in the waters of modern music, not so much super-commercial stuff as just things I hear or stumble across.

One more from me and then I'll stop clogging up the thread; beautiful song with some serious rhythm too; the drums, bongos and tambourine are really well recorded but the melody and horns really shine through - lyrics are lovely, too:

Just not into.... interesting.

Is art a communal expression of agreement or is meant to abrade each others thoughts and preferences and gradually move the subset forward , and advance the status quo? Without dislike there is probably little willingness to try different things. Its the programmed rebellion , its the generational ladder that climbs above the previous norm that eventually becomes the new middle.

I think that as I get older I can feel myself getting less open to the new..just like every generation, one observes and absorbs the younger and mostly fights against it. Its natural that the older one becomes , one trends are conservative, but even the young have their own entrenched positions

I think on the reception that Dylan recieved when changing to an electric guitar. Were they were unwilling to grow..or did they see that as more weed that fruit. A sell out?

I look at that list from Vdubs and can relate to couple and other have a passing acquaintance but my bet is there is a lot , like what you have mentioned on your list I have never heard. Modern music is an interesting term... New artist? Fresh songs? New styles? I used to listen to 774 on Fro and they would have artists that Id never heard of ..some did nothing for more than other times they would play something Kurt Vile Pretty Pimpin... ( newish) and think ..there are a lot of talented artists that never really become big.

this album is great... 'tranquillity base hotel and casino'. this isn't my favourite track, but possibly the most accessible. brilliantly weird record, fantastic lyricism and a band that continually change their approach. im big into the arcitc monkeys, but this album took some listening to understand.

alex turner is my generations ray davies.

I friggin' love Kurt Vile's Pretty Pimpin'. Saw him live a couple of years ago too. His album Wakin' On a Pretty Day is probably his best thing imo.

Mac Demarco is another ''modern' dude who I like pretty consistently, love two of his albums, ''2'' and also ''Salad Days''. Neither he or Kurt Vile really attempt to reinvent the wheel though; more a distillation of what has come before in terms of guitar stuff.

I have plenty of comfort-food music, stuff that I grew to love in my formative years and that no other music has ever really surpassed.

I do try however to keep an open mind and will occasionally actively seek out new stuff.

Another i like is Ray LaMontagne.. Three more Days ...his voice remind me of Joe Cocker.... so talent is out there but everyones taste is different. As I said heard him on a music segment..on a AW station so... one never knows what or where one may be exposed to it..although I do find it the most alluring when a unherard piece ha been used ina movie or a TV piece. For example I had always liked the obvious Kinks hits but now my favourite is Living on a thin line which I think first heard on The sopranos.

Vile live? Head nod and thumbs up.

Not very well known, but the great German musician Wolfgang Riechmann was working on his first solo album 'Wunderbar' in 1977/78 - he was stabbed to death in a random attack by two drunks on a Berlin street just weeks before its release.

For those who love 1970s Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Eno, etc. it's a must-have...

To my knowledge, Gary Numan has never acknowledged the debt he owes for stealing his look.

not really sure you can class lennon as a wasted talent! 14 albums with the biggest band in the world, a decade long solo career with some hits and misses... even managed to burn 18 months smashed out of his gourd in LA.

40 was too young, and a horribly tragic death... but he got everything out of himself as far as output and fulfilled talent goes.

love this one... delightfully deranged. it's like a tom waits 33 record played at 45.

brilliant vocal track. because he makes it sound so effortless, it's difficult to grasp just how hard that would have been - not just on his voice, but to actually reach them all.

Massive Leonard Cohen fan, but also love the voice of Johnette Napolitano

love the Blonde, and Johnette is hot. I saw them one snowy night in the 80s in a pub in downtown Seattle. We were basically next to the stage and got a great look at them. They were missing Mankey around that time but was still and excellent show.

Certain tracks just flick that switch...and transport one back to time and place. George McCrea was the soundtrack to relative's drunken house parties in 1974...1975...1976...I can smell the Old Spice from here and, yes, make mine a Ballantines...

Rock Your Body was written by KC, who kept reworking the track, and banking the cheques, for the next 10 years with the Sunshine Band...
