It wasn't generally believed, because they didn't have any substance to their claims.
That's why earlier this year they stood holding empty binders with 'phase one'.

It's only now that we've been informed that Trump is named in the files, and Trump is sending his former lawyer to do secret, private meetings with Maxwell leading towards a Presidential pardon... And Trump is shutting down any attempt to investigate this matter... that there is actual substance to question.

Epstein does have the whiff of Israeli intelligence about him, but why should that keep the US president from releasing the files of a foreign intelligence operation?
