Thing is, Port's best guess of the right man, was Leon Cameron. Which goes to show what a crap-shoot it is trying to pick the right man from the harem of eunuchs that is the assistant coaches.

AFC cannot afford to select its next coach by effectively buying another lottery ticket. The misplaced arrogant self-confidence of selection panels is a universal law of employment, in that they congenitally believe they can sort wheat from chaff, when frankly, post-examination simply proves that they are buying lottery tickets.

If Chappie were to accidentally come across this post by some miracle, I would implore him to remind the panel to be humble. The only right selection that is consistent with their stated goals -- powerhouse club, no shortage of money -- is by whatever means to get an experienced AFL head coach, who has proven success from the outside and outstanding reputation from the inside. Nothing less.

Starting to get to quite an experienced team to back up a promising prospect in Bassett. Does look to have some potential.

Clarko/Longmire with Bassett as assistant sounds better :-b

Fair call. Perhaps not 'misguided' but certainly biased. It's not a revolutionary move to give Bassett the job, and Crows need a revolution.

True, but Lyon also never achieved the ultimate success at the Saints and in the end was only there for a few years where as Clarkson has been at the Hawks for a decade and won 2 (or 3) flags, so the situations aren't the same and they will be thought of very differently.

If he leaves he will do it the right way, but there are numerous "right" ways. He could cite family and/or health reasons, or say he's after a new challenge and wants to let Bolton take over so he can start his head coaching journey, etc. This could pretty easily be spun so he's not hated (by most) at Hawthorn.

Its actually something I thought of during the week. Do you have to have a Senior Assistant type of set up?

If we are saying we want the best set up in the AFL, and are getting the cheque book out, I'd go with;

Director of Coaching - A wise older head who oversees all coaching from AFL Head coach, through line coaches and SANFL coaches. No game day role other than observation and feedback during the week.

Head Coach - The Main man

Head of strategy and innovation - someone with a bit of left field thinking ability. They look for 'extras' that could be added to the game plan. A bit like the Port 'cheat and get the ball in before the behind goes through', or their blitz play in the prelim.

Senior Assistant Coach & Leadership expert - An experienced coach who can assist in the box and oversees the leadership program both on field and off field.

Line coaches - specific responsibilities for their players. Forward, Midfield, Backlines, Stoppages/ruck

Player welfare manager - oversees the players off field life. Links with the Head coach and line coaches regularly. All coaches MUST demonstrate a genuine interest in the players off field life.

SANFL Coach - as name suggests

My dream team (and slightly possible) under this then would look something like;

Director of Coaching - Rodney Eade

Head Coach - Brett Ratten

Head of strategy and innovation - Nathan Bassett - no-one is more left of centre thinking!

Senior Assistant & Leadership - Mark Harvey

Line Coaches - Forward Podsiadly (retired from playing), Midfield O'Keefe, Backlines Dasher, Stoppages/Ruck Lade

Player welfare Manager - Me. No-one would be more interested! Slight stalker risk.

SANFL Coach - Not Bickley (he needs to move on). Stay with Younie.

But the point is that he revolutionised an SANFL club... of what impact is he going to have at the Crows, a club he only left 6 years ago? That is, within the timeframe that several/many(?) current players were still playing. I think we can see from history, it isn't ideal to coach your former teammates: Primus, Hird, Buckley, Voss, with Woosha being the exception.

It's even less ideal when your club already has a reputation for being a boys club!

The level of anticipation for you and other real fans was probably the same but Ports 'supporter' base was much smaller than that it is now.

At the time we were linked to Rodney Eade, Mick Malthouse, (who had to refute it several times), Leon Cameron, Scott Burns and Brett Ratten.

One thing that was very evident during the process we went through was that very few potential coaches would admit to being in the mix as they didn't want to tarnish their reputation if they were knocked back. We even had the farcical situation of Brett Ratten spruiking his credentials for the job, then saying he's withdrawing from the process after meeting with Port all in a 24hour period.

FWIW, as much as I was against getting Ratten at the time, the Malthouse experience at Carlton has shown that he wasn't as bad as people thought. He's certainly been around some top operators over the years and I doubt Hawks would have held on to him as an AC if he wasn't any good.

I think you can rule out Clarkson and Longmire but there are a handful of quality ACs at both these clubs that would be ideal candidates for the Crows.

Mark Harvey is a giant spud. I have sources at other clubs, including ones that have worked in the box with him and he is a dead set w***er.

I cannot see it being Basset. It is not consistent with the messages coming from AFC in the last two weeks. "Powerhouse club with no shortage of money", does not say "We are looking at a head coach with success in the lower grades, and who ticks a few KPI boxes that suggests he might be able to pull it off like Hinckley did".

And, by the same thinking, no to Dew, Bolton.....

I reckon some of the rhetoric come from the club does point to Bass. The obscure reference to a premiership coach certainly aligns. At a time as well when we are clearly looking to overhaul how we go about things, which again, he has clearly demonstrated his ability to do.

What is people's objection to Ratten. He was clearly doing a much better job at Carlton than people gave him credit for. His assistant role since then I reckon would see him as a fairly rounded candidate.

I personally have had a gutful of seeing good assistant coaches become crap senior coaches. Clearly there is little correlation between successful assistant and premiership quality senior coach. This position must be someone with senior coaching experience.

Have you forgotten the infamous Gabba choke in 09 or the 2011 pass mark of "winning a final". The whole point of getting rid of Sanderson is the quest to find an elite coach that will bring success to the club. There are plenty of "decent" coaches out there (Ratten, Voss, Laidley etc), but I would hope that the club is actually wanting more than that otherwise we would have just stuck with Sanderson. Decent coaches win games, but great coaches win premierships.

I don't think it's fair to label us Norwood fans as misguided. The facts are there for all to see, Nathan Bassett can coach. He completely turned around the Norwood FC. This wasn't a tweak, it was a revolution. The only question mark (and I share it) is whether he can go up another level from the SANFL to the AFL.

A huge part of the role for me is having someone with the skills and aptitude required to align and focus a group of young men towards a common goal. Man management effectively. On this front, there is no 'step up' from SANFL to AFL - you are dealing with the same human behaviours and traits that exist in all young men in the age bracket, regardless of the league they play in. Again, if anything it may be harder to achieve this in the SANFL because you don't have access to the same resources (for things like personality profiling, development programs etc..).

Obviously the step up comes in the form of developing and evolving a gameplan that stands up at the highest level, but having played over 200 games in the AFL system and being an assistant under one of the most effective AFL coaches of the modern age, he is clearly no pigmy on that front. Give him a couple of senior people around him to complement any technical gaps that may for the first couple of years and watch him flourish.

Throw in the mix his absolute drive, resolve and determination to succeed, and I think we have the makings of an absolute gun coach.

Port wanted Malthouse, Ratten, Cameron and then stumbled across Hinkley who had his hand up the whole time. Even the players were disappointed when Hawthorn appointed Clarkson. Yet both coaches are now rated in my opinion as the best two coaches in the league.

On the flip side, Everyone at Essendon wanted Hird, Everyone at Collingwood wanted Buckley and everyone at Brisbane wanted Voss yet all three have been a massive let down.

I'm kind of hoping to be disappointed when we announce our next coach.

of course they "want" more, but its not guaranteed.

based on the reports what was guaranteed was that Sando had lost a lot of the players and was leading us down a dead end, so you bite the bullet and roll the dice. We're better off trying another rookie for two years and then trying to snag a Clarkson type if it fails, rather than continue with Sando for the two years.

I don't think so. Look back at the reports of how Bomber Thompson left the Cats, four years ago. His legacy wasn't burned. He did it on October 4th, a few days after the Grand Final, he told the club president on the morning of the announcement, a club he had built from not much and got to two premierships in the prior three years, and left in good enough nick to win the next one coached by a virgin. Thompson's reasons were "I think with coaching … in the process you miss family functions, you miss doing certain things, you do a lot of things only half-good. I thought I’d get back and look after myself a little bit, and I’m looking forward to that." Clarko could legitimately make a similar rationale, "rethinking my priorities, family first, a rare chance to keep coaching while addressing those priorities," etc. And, "as for what I said last week, I was boxed into a corner and it was the only unselfish thing to say. The team had to come first. Now it's my family's turn. I hope you will forgive me."

Folks, let's be quite clear, the AFC has had big problems off field for some time and those are as much to blame for our current situation as Sando was.

The Tippettgate affair, the caving in to AFL House over Rendell (one of the top half dozen recruiters in the country), the old boys club have left us needing dramatic changes.

The new CEO from outside the AFL is an inspiring start. We must fill all the support jobs with the right peopleand relieve Noble of his onerous workload. We must get a Head Coach who is tough and uncompromising and NOT a former AFC player. We need to move on (and out) a number of the Assistant Coaches who clearly haven't worked out.

I'm fine with an untried coach providing he has come from a strong club. Stewie Dew knocked back the successor to Paul Roos job to stay at Sydney as the Senior Assistant, Leigh Tudor has a decade of finals success at Geelong, Sydney and now the revitalised North. Both would be worth a shot and should bring ome credentialled assistants with them.

Those touting Ratten, remember he wasn't the choice to coach Hawthorn this year in Clarkson's absence so read into that he's not second banana there.

No new coach can get us into the top four in the near future, our list just isn't good enough. Forget that we could have made the eight this year, we are a long way short of the top five sides. Our last 6-7 players are not AFL to four standard.

This will be an appointment to build the club over the next 3-4 years, not an appointment with a short term peak in performance.
