well everything he said last night except the line to the fans obviously...look at danger on the footy show recently. he put out the flames of the rumours but at no point did he actually say he was staying. now if that footy show was in Adelaide (hypothetically) and he said to the crowd with a huge smile on his face "to all the crow fans! im not going anywhere!" then you could bet he would be staying.
you say "im not leaving im contracted to the hawks and I love it here" and you keep eye contact with gary lyon in a calm unemotional voice. you don't turn to the fans (at least a thousand of them being hawk fans) and exclaim with a huge smile "To all the hawk fans, Im not going anywhere!"

Folks, let's be quite clear, the AFC has had big problems off field for some time and those are as much to blame for our current situation as Sando was.

The Tippettgate affair, the caving in to AFL House over Rendell (one of the top half dozen recruiters in the country), the old boys club have left us needing dramatic changes.

The new CEO from outside the AFL is an inspiring start. We must fill all the support jobs with the right peopleand relieve Noble of his onerous workload. We must get a Head Coach who is tough and uncompromising and NOT a former AFC player. We need to move on (and out) a number of the Assistant Coaches who clearly haven't worked out.

I'm fine with an untried coach providing he has come from a strong club. Stewie Dew knocked back the successor to Paul Roos job to stay at Sydney as the Senior Assistant, Leigh Tudor has a decade of finals success at Geelong, Sydney and now the revitalised North. Both would be worth a shot and should bring ome credentialled assistants with them.

Those touting Ratten, remember he wasn't the choice to coach Hawthorn this year in Clarkson's absence so read into that he's not second banana there.

No new coach can get us into the top four in the near future, our list just isn't good enough. Forget that we could have made the eight this year, we are a long way short of the top five sides. Our last 6-7 players are not AFL to four standard.

This will be an appointment to build the club over the next 3-4 years, not an appointment with a short term peak in performance.

But the point is that he revolutionised an SANFL club... of what impact is he going to have at the Crows, a club he only left 6 years ago? That is, within the timeframe that several/many(?) current players were still playing. I think we can see from history, it isn't ideal to coach your former teammates: Primus, Hird, Buckley, Voss, with Woosha being the exception.

It's even less ideal when your club already has a reputation for being a boys club!

I don't have the time to do it, but I'd doubt there'd be too many left from Bass' playing days!

Sure he'll be an upgrade on Sando but does not live up to the hype peddled.

My mate still reckons whoever it is was lined up 2 weeks ago. Still no names though.

Don't get me wrong clarko is number 1 for excitement reasons. The hype should chill in case we land something not so great

Im not saying that we are going to land Clarko however I'm not prepared to rule out either

looking at the way Sando was sacked, what has been said and not said by the club, the level of information that Jars broke and the way the statenment was retracted, IMO there is definte Smoke

I also dont put to much weight on Clarko's message to Hawks supporters, football history is littered with players, player managers, administrators and coaches not being completely open, honest and transparent so I do find it difficult to trust what is said through the media especially when contracts are involved

what I do know is that we had a massive crack at Sando 3 years ago and we missed him by a bees dick which opened the door for Sando and if the $1.5m per season rumors are correct this is a $500k uplift on our previous offer which may be enough capital to be the game changer

to conclude and based on what we know I dont think anyone can be definite one way or another

Still don't know why people are talking top four next year, even Al Clarkson can't get our squad to displace those teams that currently hold the top four/five spots, we just don't have the cattle - so get over it, we have to go into a slow build courtesy of the Trigg legacy!

A huge part of the role for me is having someone with the skills and aptitude required to align and focus a group of young men towards a common goal. Man management effectively. On this front, there is no 'step up' from SANFL to AFL - you are dealing with the same human behaviours and traits that exist in all young men in the age bracket, regardless of the league they play in. Again, if anything it may be harder to achieve this in the SANFL because you don't have access to the same resources (for things like personality profiling, development programs etc..).

Obviously the step up comes in the form of developing and evolving a gameplan that stands up at the highest level, but having played over 200 games in the AFL system and being an assistant under one of the most effective AFL coaches of the modern age, he is clearly no pigmy on that front. Give him a couple of senior people around him to complement any technical gaps that may for the first couple of years and watch him flourish.

Throw in the mix his absolute drive, resolve and determination to succeed, and I think we have the makings of an absolute gun coach.

agree in part. Just because you have access to resources in AFL won't make it any easier necessarily. You need to have skills in delegating and getting your assistants to buy into your message and to hold them accountable. The key question is Bassett able to utilize the resources at his disposal at AFL level effectively. I think you can be a bit more of a one man band in the sanfl.

Blighty quit us and said that he would never coach again and ended up at St Kilda however we still love him....

If our next coach delivers us 3 flags in 10 years and left us for another club and more money, yes I would be disappointed however I would forgive him and as a triple premiership coach he would always be welcome back

would Hawks fan be angry at first, probably yes however in 10 years time would he be viewed as one of the clubs greatest coaches and welcomed back, probably yes again

I think we find it harder to forgive players than we do coaches

Thing is, Port's best guess of the right man, was Leon Cameron. Which goes to show what a crap-shoot it is trying to pick the right man from the harem of eunuchs that is the assistant coaches.

AFC cannot afford to select its next coach by effectively buying another lottery ticket. The misplaced arrogant self-confidence of selection panels is a universal law of employment, in that they congenitally believe they can sort wheat from chaff, when frankly, post-examination simply proves that they are buying lottery tickets.

If Chappie were to accidentally come across this post by some miracle, I would implore him to remind the panel to be humble. The only right selection that is consistent with their stated goals -- powerhouse club, no shortage of money -- is by whatever means to get an experienced AFL head coach, who has proven success from the outside and outstanding reputation from the inside. Nothing less.

So what happens when Clarko says no?

Should we have kept Sanderson and tread water? Or gone backwards?

At the time we were linked to Rodney Eade, Mick Malthouse, (who had to refute it several times), Leon Cameron, Scott Burns and Brett Ratten.

One thing that was very evident during the process we went through was that very few potential coaches would admit to being in the mix as they didn't want to tarnish their reputation if they were knocked back. We even had the farcical situation of Brett Ratten spruiking his credentials for the job, then saying he's withdrawing from the process after meeting with Port all in a 24hour period.

FWIW, as much as I was against getting Ratten at the time, the Malthouse experience at Carlton has shown that he wasn't as bad as people thought. He's certainly been around some top operators over the years and I doubt Hawks would have held on to him as an AC if he wasn't any good.

I think you can rule out Clarkson and Longmire but there are a handful of quality ACs at both these clubs that would be ideal candidates for the Crows.

Clarkson could quite easily justify his TFS denial if he ended up coming over.

Any of the above would be sufficient to quell ongoing hatred of Hawks fans - there would be some initial bitterness but that wouldn't last. Hell, most have forgiven Buddy already and he might cost them a flag. People move on rather quickly.

I reckon some of the rhetoric come from the club does point to Bass. The obscure reference to a premiership coach certainly aligns. At a time as well when we are clearly looking to overhaul how we go about things, which again, he has clearly demonstrated his ability to do.

Scott Watters has a record similar to Bassett, dual WAFL premiership coach, highly rated assistant to Malthouse at Collingwood and then no support from the board at St Kilda when went about rebuilding the seriously aging list left by Lyon, even though he was given the gig on the understanding a rebuild was required, unfortunately the board went to water and did not hold the line.

I'm no Norwood fanboi - but credit where it's due he has the 2 indicators covered;

1. Wins flags
2. Makes players better

I agree it will be a let down, but you have to respect Bassetts achievements.

And Ratten? Well in 2011 lost a semi to WCE in Perth by 3 points which fuelled massive expectation for 2012.

They were 5-2 sitting 4 th when we rolled into town and wacked them as well as Patty removing Murphy for the season.

A few other injuries and they never recovered - bang end of Ratten.

I remember Blighty saying that you are a better Coach the 2nd time round however our system at present is unforgiving and doesnt seem to provide some coaches like Ratten who may have been harshly sacked a 2nd opportunity

with this theme in mind there are also others within the Industry who just cant believe that Williams never picked up another Head Coach role after being sacked at Port, yes he had his crontrol issues at Port however many still believe that he is a brillant coached, well respected by his players and would have learnt from his mistakes at Port

IMO Ratten is extremely unlucky

Sando getting the ass without any rumblings?
He only resigned months ago!
Lets face it. He wasn't that bad in gerneral..
betts came out only a week or two ago saying Sando was the man to take the Crows to the flag!

It all points to one of two things. We have signed someone already or players threatened to leave if he didnt (although players always backed him in)

No announcement of interviews and alot of past coaches saying there is no interest....really? No interest in hundreds of thousands of dollars...not even a chance?? says to me it will be from the Swans or Hawks. Otherwise I think we would hear more.

Not overly keen on Ratten but he didn't do too badly with Carlton with the list they had and comparing his to Malthouse's results. Also the years at the Hawks would have done wonders for him.
