Wasn't Callan Ward a band 2 compensation pick? Just remember reading that somewhere. Scully was band 1, Ward band 2. Think the WB's 2nd rounder was Ward's compo. Could be wrong though, happy to be corrected.

Yeah it was band 2. Which meant a pick after our first pick. We took Jackson Macrae.

GWS will be spewing they drafted two duds with pick 2 and 3 and left Stringer alone.

Actually looking at that, GWS's drafting in this draft is nothing short of atrocious.

Aiden Corr ahead of Grundy was the biggest WTF moment in the whole draft...now who have they got to back Mumford up?

Pick 6 is what we got (jackson Macrae). Melbourne got pick 3 and 13 for scully. Yes its still a sore point for many dogs fans.

Hey at least you can say....you got Stringer and Macrae and they took....well you know who.

Obviously not too much of a risk for the doggies to use pick 5.

When you have 2 picks in the top 6 you can take a gamble. It is why at the time people were telling GWS to take a punt. Their picks were very safe.

GWS's drafting really hasn't been all its cracked up to be. Weight of numbers dictated they would/will be a great side.

That comforts me most nights :D

Think they have done well with the smalls, but missed a massive opportunity not taking Brodie Grundy in my view. Their KP backs that they have drafted have all been 'reaches', now whilst you get a good one 1 in 3, that isn't what I'll be spending a top 3 pick on.

100% agree. How they continued to pass on Grundy when they had two picks (12 and 14 from) memory as well as the top 3 and they still didn't pick him astounds me. At the time I was so hopeful that we took him at 6 (along with Stringer) and in hindsight Grundy wouldn't have diminished his worth at all.

I could get the top 3 selections, didn't agree with 2 of them but I could see the merit in them. However passing on Grundy at 12 and 14 was silly, especially for Corr who was an absolute reach. Jacksh at least was rated around that mark so you could understand that selection.

Actually really love watching the Dogs play. Apart from watching Sydney, always sit down and watch the Dogs play.

I think we may have spooked them. I know Stringer was an absolute lock at pick 5. We badly needed a tall who could kick goals and he was the obvious one, but I pretty sure we were confident we would get O'Rourke at 6 (think his range was around (5 - 12) pre-draft). Plowman decision was baffling (3rd tall type which shouldn't be taken inside the top 5) and Corr was another strange one (where they purely drafted for needs) jacksh had some merit to it as we were linked to him also at pick 6.

The rumour I heard was that Grundy straight up told the GWS recruiters during interviews that he didn't want to be there and if they drafted him he'd leave at the earliest oportunity. Pretty much said he had no respect for them whatsoever, and did the same to Melbourne too. I reckon GWS then just crossed him off their list. Didn't matter whether he was available at one of their other first round picks, they didn't want someone who wasn't going to buy in.

That is where I don't agree with that thinking, you back your culture to change the players mind.

Yeah, they have a tendency to try and be cute with their picks. O'Rourke was seen as a top five pick but he was skinny as all hell, they needed some more solidly built mids. And Plowman was a real headscratcher since they had two picks in the range that he was projected to go.

I saw Ablett Snr and I don't see any style that equates with Stringer.

But that's not a dig at Stringer. I've said ad nauseum that I rate him. I just don't see the comparison. I don't see the comparison with any other player. Ablett Snr reminds me of nobody.

But if you do, that's all that matters. Why be concerned by the opinion of others ?

Hamish Hartlett reminds me of Snr a lot. The way he moves.

Name any other young player in the league who has kicked 47 goals in a 19 game streak in which that 19 game streak comes within the first 38 games of their career.

Don't know about that exact criteria but Jack kicked 53 goals in his second season, including a bag of 4 in the finals.

Your being very polite there.

What the hell were they thinking! Lucky that Whitfield looks reasonable
