As good as Gaz is, i doubt he'll even come close to the Brownlow because he does whinge a little to the umpires (and rightly so) due the the treatment he gets behind the play.

I do beleive he will be All-Australian this year though.

Yep, that's the one thing stopping him.

That, and the fact that he'll be tagged out of a lot of games he plays. He needs to get better at shaking the tag.

He's pretty damn good at shaking the tag now me thinks. This was a problem in 05 and in 06 he got better. This year he will dominate. I agree that his winging will prevent him from getting some votes.

Tagged you say? He's been tagged the whole of his career, after all he's been our best and most dangerous foward for years. Do you think that has escaped the attention of opposition coaches and players.

Yes he will get tagged, I agree but he's going to get a lot more help from the other mids and access to a lot more ball and have much more influence on the game.

As I said previously, he can win it if he plays the whole year in midfield, because he is a little CHAMP .:thumbsu:

I was thinking about this also and wondered to what degree the improvement of Mackie and Prismall and recent inclusions of Stokes and Selwood into the midfield will really help Gazs cause this season...

Its got to help him.

I don't know about that.

Chapman and Corey can help in that they may draw the tag if they play well but I can't see how Mackie, Stokes and Prismall will have any bearing on Ablett being tagged.

I think he will be much better this year:

· Not only has he got better over the break, but a quicker and fitter Bartel, Corey and Enright will see the best opposition tagger having to choose which midfielder to go to. If they choose Ablett then no doubt one of the other three will fire up and do a similar amount of damage as Gaza. If they choose Corey for example, Ablett will dominate

· The maturity and improvement of guys like Mackie, Tenace (hopefully), Stokes and Prismall will only cause greater concerns for opposition coaches as our midfield rotations will be almost unmatchable. Add Selwood to this list and we should be more than comfortable in the middle.

· The improvement of our forward line structure should see Gaza in a predominately midfield role, while Chappy and Stokes/Byrnes handle the small forward role.

Lets hope he really stands up and fires this year as one of the competitions greater midfielders!

It may not help GAJ personally, but it will definitely help the team. If a tagger is tied up on GAJ, those other guys could run off with the opportunistic ball-get that GAJ is so good at getting (and that they're getting good at) and offset the cost of the GAJ tag.

EDIT: Just read Cat_Fanatic's post and I think we're saying the same sort of thing.

Garry's odds for the Brownlow have been slashed by TAB Sportsbet from 101 to 51 overnight. Is he the sort of player that could make it?

He back chats the men in white a bit too much, I hear. My money is on Lingy

Gaz's team-mates could have a big say in how he goes. Yes, he does get tagged each week but they could make it a bit easier for him by deliberately targetting his opponent, ie. blocking for Junior/taking out his opponent at the stoppages.

That's why it's good to have a hard arse like Mooney, Rooke or Chappy around the stoppages.

Lucky i got some coin on him beforehand.

I rate him as a serious chance. The kid is all class and will be borderline Hird-esque IMO.
