I have read some very credible doctors and scientists views on this, and their view and stats don't support it. The only thing that's worse than flu with this virus and how infectious it is.

As was told to me by this person, healthy people who do get sick are sicker than normal flu, but they recover. Kids tend to be asymptomatic, which is weird, but are little bags or disease spreading pus, so it gets around really easily once it gets into a community. People are also symptomatic for longer. All this adds up to more time off work, less productivity and a downturn in economic activity.

Oh yeah, and this defo meets the definition of a pandemic and is being treated as such for all intents and purposes. Perhaps it is not being officially called this to keep the masses calm (perhaps because it ain't a particularly dangerous virus in its own right) or because for economic purposes (either nefarious (pandemic bond maturation etc.) or justified).

Hope your guy is not quite on the money with this, but if he is spot on, you'd have to question if this AFL season will go full length, as if this worsens considerably in 2-3 months, I can't see too many people wanting to attend footy matches in the middle of pandemic.

He's not terribly optimistic about avoiding exposure to the general community at this point, its moreso a question of how severe it will be once it gets out there a bit more. If people follow the basic premise of washing their hands regularly and not touching their face unless they are sure their hands are sterile(ish) then we should be able to stop a massive spread. Masks are not really that effective in preventing spread apparently, unless someone coughs on you.

What is more likely now though is that this disease will now become endemic in human society, so we will see repeat outbreaks over time unless we get a vaccine done soon, and have that available as part of the flu vaccinations from here on out.
