ROUND 1 BRUNSWICK

Sports writers were of the opinion that the season started too early--April 12. The weather was still warm and the ground very hard. Still a crowd of around 6000 turned up at Brunswick Park. There was no love lost between these two sides, especially after their controversial Round 17 meeting the previous year two weeks before the finals. Brunswick had unexpectedly won knocking North from top spot causing much ill feeling in the North camp. North fans felt that captain Syd Barker was not doing his best. Barker was heckled and jeered throughout the match and a crowd of fans waited for him outside the dressing room and followed him to a nearby hotel. Barker needed a police escort. It would be his last game for the season.
Today, however, there would be no such upset. North, with 6 new players in the line-up, took control early and were never seriously threatened. The game was not high standard and many spectators left before the end, North winning comfortably by 53 points. The new players fitted into the side well.

NM 3.3 4.6 8.8 15.12-102
BRU 0.1 2.5 3.7 7.7-49

Goals: Miles 4, K.Johnson 3, Carpenter 2, Moran 2, Hawkins 2, Rawle, Hardy.
Best: Rawle, Hardy, Moran, Jones, Carpenter, Miles, Cave.

ROUND 2 BRIGHTON

North included new players Franks and Smith in the team and no doubt expected an easy win over the lowly seasiders. But the game proved a disaster. Before half-time three players had sustained injuries. Hardy had broken a bone in his foot, Carpenter had a strained ankle and Gardiner had a badly bruised shoulder. The hardness of the ground was blamed by the sports writers for this. In the third quarter Miles was injured further handicapping the home side. They were still ahead at three quarter time but were finished and could not score in the final quarter, losing the lead in the last ten minutes. Hardy, who had refused to leave the ground, would miss most of the season with his injury.

NM 1.5 4.6 5.6 5.6-36
BRI 2.0 3.2 5.4 7.6-48

Goals: Hardy 1, remainder unknown.
Best: Cave, Harden, Speakman, Moran, Smith.

ROUND 3 ESSENDON

With a team weakened by injury, North went to Essendon knowing they were in for a hard game. This would be the Dreadnought's last season as a power team. They would not make the finals again after 1914. But presently they were still competitive and capable of matching it with the top teams. The match was close and hard fought throughout. North included new players Hart, Woodington, Condon and McQueen. Ten minutes into the game North were reduced to 15 men when Smith was sandwiched in a crush and sustained a broken collarbone. Despite this North retained the lead, thanks in part to some inaccurate kicking by the opposition. Then, with 9 minutes to play, K. Johnson, their clever forward broke his leg trying to stop an opponent. But North, with their defenders putting in a grand performance forcing Essendon to shoot from far out, held on to win by four points.

NM 2.5 5.8 8.7 9.9-63
ESS 1.7 3.10 6.14 7.17-59

Goals: K Johnson 4, Moran 3,Hawkins 2.
Best: Cave, Sheehan, Rawle, McQueen, Condon, Franks, Speakman.

After 3 rounds, North were fourth. It appeared that Footscray would once again be their main opposition for the flag.

ROUND 4 PRAHRAN

Facing a long injury list the club's strong feeling against Syd Barker quickly diminished and he was re-instated as a player. Miles was also included having recovered from injury. But Hardy, K Johnson, Carpenter, Smith and Gardiner could not be considered.
The match at Prahran was close until three quarter time after which North ran away. Prahran worried North early with their high marking, but Franks going into the ruck in the second quarter gave North an edge and North's forward line was better.

NM 2.1 4.5 6.7 11.8-74
PRA 2.5 4.6 5.9 5.10-40

Goals: Hawkins 4,Miles 2,Moran 2,Hart,Condon,Cave.
Best: Rawle, Cave, Woodington, McQueen, Franks, Hawkins

ROUND 5 NORTHCOTE

With Carpenter and Gardiner returning to the side, North annihilated the weak brickfielders They kicked a century--a rarer occurrence then--and should have won by much more. North took charge from the outset and kept Northcote goalless until the final quarter.

NM 6.9 12.13 17.18 17.23-125
NO 0.0 0.2 0.3 2.4-16

Goals: Moran 5, Hawkins 4, Condon 2, Cave 2.
Best: Speakman, Barker, Rawle, Moran, Hawkins, Cave.

ROUND 6 HAWTHORN

North traveled to the ground of VFA newbies Hawthorn for the first time. North were clearly the superior side but Hawthorn held their own in open play. A total of 191 points was scored, North getting the lion's share. North's shooting for goal was poor but Hawthorn's was atrocious. North having their defense pierced 28 times would have caused concern against a stronger team. Hawthorn fans demonstrated noisily against the umpire after the game.

NM 6.3 12.8 17.13 19.19-133
HAW 1.7 4. 10 6.17 6.22-58

Goals: Moran 4.
Best: Hawkins, Moran, Franks, Barker, Rawle, Cave, Condon, Woodington.

Thanks to shock losses to Footscray and Williamstown in Round 5, North headed the table after one third of the season had gone. Williamstown lost again in Round 6 against Footscray.

ROUND 7 FOOTSCRAY

This rematch of last year's finalists was eagerly awaited and about 7000 turned up at Arden St to see it. A good hard fast game eventuated, but Footscray were well below their form and North led all day and went on to win by 30 points. North selected Heron for his first game of the season. He lined up on the wing against former North player Grierson and was beaten on the day. However Cave on the other wing dominated for North. Franks was applauded for a kick that travelled about 75 yards. He and Barker were too strong in the packs for their opponents. The Australasian noted that North were an exceptionally strong side as well as the burliest in the competition. Their lack of pace was more than compensated by strength, determination and teamwork.

NM 4.3 7.7 8.9 11.16-82
FOOT 2.3 3.4 5.6 7.10-52

Goals: Hawkins 4, Carpenter 3, Condon 2, Moran, Gardiner
Best: Cave, Carpenter, Franks, Rawle, Barker, Woodington, Speakman.

ROUND 8 WILLIAMSTOWN

In one of the best games of the season, North held on the win by 5 points. North got out to an early lead which blew out to 32 points early in the second quarter. But from then on Williamstown, who were always a much better side on their home ground, had the better of it and were wearing North down until desperate defense and the final bell saved them. In the last quarter Williamstown hit the lead by two points, But North replied. Franks, in an attempt to mark the heavy ball in the last quarter, broke a finger in his left hand. Hawkins was reported for charging.

NM 4.2 6.7 7.10 8.14-62
WILL 1.1 4.3 6.7 8.9-57

Goals: Hawkins 3, Moran 2.
Best: Franks, Woodington, Barker,Carpenter, Jones, Hawkins.

ROUND 9 PORT MELBOURNE

Harden and Wood came into the side for Franks and Hawkins. North had just as much of the play against Port, but their forwards let them down badly. Especially in the third quarter when they scored 1.10. At one stage in the last quarter North got to within 3 points but Port then scored 2 quick goals to close out the match.

NM 1.6 3.9 4.19 6.21-57
PORT 3.2 5.2 9.2 11.6- 72

Goals: Gardiner 3, Miles 2, Moran
Best : Cave, Barker, Miles, Speakman, Woodington, Jones, Rawle, Sheehan, Heron.

At the half-way mark of the season North still headed the table, but only 8 points separated first from sixth. It looked like would be a tight struggle.

ROUND 10 BRIGHTON

Of the 26 encounters between these two sides from 1908-1924, Brighton managed 5 wins--2 of them this season. North dropped Harden and Woods and included Murphy and McQueen. They were sorely missing Hawkins and Franks. The game was fast, open and at times brilliant. Brighton got away to a good start in the first quarter but North pegged then back in the second. After that it was goal for goal with Brighton hanging on to win by 3 points.

NM 1.1 5.6 7.6 8.8-56
BRI 4.2 6.3 8.4 9.5-59

Goals: Moran 2, Miles 2, Carpenter 2, Murphy, Rawle.

Best: Woodington Cave, Barker, Rawle, Carpenter, Jones, Cornall.

ROUND 11 ESSENDON

North welcomed back their captain Charlie Hardy after two months on the sidelines. Franks also returned with his hand bandaged. Hardy played on the forward line until the last quarter, wisely keeping out of the crushes. But later he roved in his customary position. Franks played full-back. The game was interesting and affected by a breeze that blew across the ground but slightly favouring the Arden St goal. Essendon played into North's hands by playing the wrong side of the ground when they had the wind. North won by 22 points.
Hardy, who kicked the sealer, was chaired off the ground by delighted supporters. Interestingly, the Essendon players seemed to be as anxious as anyone else lest Hardy should be hurt, such was his popularity! Chivalry in the extreme!

NM 3.3 3.5 6.8 8.10-58
ESS 1.1 3.4 3.4 5.6-36

Goals: Hardy 3, Moran 2, Carpenter, Miles, McQueen.
Best: Barker, Cornall, Rawle, T.Jones, Hardy, Sheehan, Carpenter, Speakman.

ROUND 12 BRUNSWICK

A great come from behind win to North after Brunswick had the better of the first half. Brunswick had the better teamwork, while North relied on weight and strength. However, North rallied in the second half scoring 7 goals to 3. Hardy was accidentally kicked in the head and spent most of the second quarter off the ground.

NM 2.2 3.2 5.3 10.8-68
BRU 1.4 5.6 7.7 8.8-56

Goals: Moran 3,Miles 2,Franks 2,W.Jones 2,McQueen.
Best: Woodington, Gardiner, Sheehan, Cornall, Cave, Carpenter, Rawle, Miles, Moran, W.Jones.

North and Footscray were now two games clear on top and looked certain finalists. The two remaining places were still up for grabs.

ROUND 13 PRAHRAN

T.Jones (On holiday in Wandiligong) and W.Jones were replaced in the side by Hopkins (returning for his first game in almost a year) and Smith. Prahran were very confident of winning as they had a liking for the big Arden St ground. Once again the wind blew across the ground but favoured the City end.But surprisingly, each side did better against the wind than with it. It was close all day with the play suiting the big ruckmen. North held on to win by 11 points. The uniforms of both sides were very similar causing confusion.

NM 1.2 3.4 5.6 6.10-46
PRA 1.1 3.2 4.4 5.5-35

Goals: Smith 2, Moran 2, Miles 2.

Best: Barker, Hardy, Rawle, Franks, Woodington, Cornall, Carpenter, Gardiner, Hopkins.

ROUND 14 NORTHCOTE

Two new players--Dodemaide and Taplin--were included in the team. The largest crowd ever seen at Croxton Park gathered to see the home team take on North. Although having won only one match, Northcote were showing definite signs of improvement. It was fast and close until half-time after which North went away. In the second quarter blows were exchanged between two players behind the umpire's back, Taplin appearing to be knocked out for some minutes. Up until three quarter time North's 9 goals had been kicked by 9 players.

NM 2.4 4.9 9.12 13.16-94
NOR 2.2 4.2 6.7 8.10-58

Goals: Sheehan 2,Moran 2,Gardiner 2,Dodemaide 2,Smith, Carpenter, Barker, Hardy, Franks.

Best: Barker, Hardy, Woodington, Sheehan, Gardiner, Moran, Franks, Cave, Carpenter.

ROUND 15 HAWTHORN

The North Melbourne team lined up and gave Hawthorn a big cheer, it being the new team's first appearance at Arden St. But there the goodwill ended as North went on to an easy victory. Hawthorn put up a good first quarter with the wind, but after that they were no match for the top team. Both sides were very happy with the umpiring of McMurray.

NM 2.2 6.6 10.9 17.12-114
HAW 4.1 4.3 5.5 6.6-42

Goals: Barker 3,Miles 3,Gardiner 2, Hopkins 2, Sheehan 2,Rawle 2,Dodemaide 2, Unknown 1.

Best: Barker, Hardy, Gardiner ,Cave, Franks, Hopkins, Sheehan, Rawle, Woodington.

North and Footscray had now cleared out from the rest of the competition, North now a game ahead thanks to Footscray's unexpected loss to Essendon. With just three rounds to go it looked good for North.

ROUND 16 FOOTSCRAY

The largest attendance at a VFA match for the year--about 10,000--turned up at the Western Reserve and were treated to a classic match between these two old rivals. North had a strong team but made the mistake of not including Moran. He was badly missed on the forward line in a game where goals were at a premium--only 9 in total being scored. The game was fast and close all day and, with the scores level at three quarter time, Footscray just won by two points. The tricolours played at their 1913 Final standard, but North matched them all over the ground except the forward line where they fell down badly.

NM 2.5 2.6 3.7 4.8-32
FOOT 1.0 3.1 4.1 5.4-34

Goals: Carpenter 2, Condon 1, Franks 1.

Best: Woodington, Barker, Rawle, Gardiner, Hopkins, Cornall, Carpenter

ROUND 17 WILLIAMSTOWN

Needing to win this game to retain top place, North fielded their best side for the season against Williamstown. Moran and Hawkins were brought in for Smith and Sheehan to strengthen the forward line. With Footscray playing away, many tricolours fans came to the much closer Arden St ground to see a good fast match. North excelled with their high marking and long kicking, whereas Williamstown relied too much on the belief that they were faster and short hand passing. Their small forward line was beaten by the bigger North backmen. North sealed the win in the second quarter outscoring Williamstown against the wind. They also lost Franks who fell heavily early in the third quarter fracturing three ribs. Amazingly he would return for the finals.

NM 3.3 6.4 7.7 8.8-56
WILL 1.1 2.5 4.7 5.9-39

Goals: Hawkins 2, Miles 2, Hardy 2, Franks 1, Barker 1.
Best: Carpenter, barker, Gardiner, Hardy, Woodington, Cornall, Hawkins, Miles.

ROUND 18 PORT MELBOURNE

The Argus described this game as "a ridiculous exhibition of football". Port had ceased to play the game seriously since their finals hopes had disappeared some weeks ago. North's main aim was to retain top spot from Footscray by scoring as much as possible. Port, by their slack play, appeared to be helping them do this. In return Port's Walton was "allowed" to kick 7 goals and thus be the club's goal kicking record holder. Many spectators saw this and left the ground well before the match ended. North replaced Franks with Sheehan and were in control all through having an unassailable lead by three quarter time. The farce then began as the North players seemed to stand and watch as Walton dodged among them and scored three or four goals, to the derisive laughter of the crowd. North then went for the record, kicking four more goals before the final bell.

NM 5.3 11.7 16.9 20.10-130
PORT 2.1 4.4 4.7 9.8-63

Known Goals: Hawkins 4, Carpenter 2, Miles 1, Hardy 1, Moran 1.

Best: Cornall, Sheehan, Cave, Rawle, Hardy, Carpenter, Hawkins.

North had won the minor premiership on percentage from Footscray with Essendon and Williamstown making up the four. North would now face Essendon in the Semi Final.

THE SEMI FINAL ESSENDON

VFA Finals matches had until 1912 been played at Arden St. This changed in 1913 when the VFA decided they wanted to "showcase" their finals at a more central ground. So the MCG and EMCG were used. The finals would return to NMCG in 1915.
North met Essendon at the MCG before a crowd of about 20,000. North were clearly the better side with Essendon prone to too much running and not enough kicking. North had built up a 52 point lead by three quarter time. In the last quarter Essendon kicked five goals to one but North had clearly relaxed, possibly with a view to the Final, and their lead was too great to make up.

NM 5.1 9.4 12.7 13.11-80
ESS 1.5 3.6 3.9 8.10-58

Goals: Carpenter 3, Moran 3, Hawkins 3, Jones, Hardy, Franks, Miles
Best: Carpenter, Cornall, Jones, Cave, Woodington, Barker, Rawle, Hardy.

This would be the last hurrah for Essendon. They would never again be a power in the VFA and would hover around the foot of the table until 1921, when their VFL counterparts would take over their ground and they would be forced into an amalgamation with North Melbourne.

With Footscray defeating Williamstown in the other semi-final the scene was set for a showdown between easily the two best teams of the year.

THE FINAL FOOTSCRAY

With Australia declaring war early in August some of the attention was being taken away from football. Rumours abounded that North would let Footscray win so that a Grand Final could be played the following week and thus swell the coffers of the VFA and the clubs, North as minor premier having the right to challenge if they lost. It was probably these factors that affected the attendance--about 10-12000--which was less than the two semi-final matches. Much money changed hands in betting on the result.
Both teams were at virtually full strength. Moran, who had enlisted, got late permission to play and arrived from the Broadmeadows training camp. The weather was warm and the ground very hard but slippery. This affected the play of both sides but more so Footscray.

Footscray won the toss and had first use of what breeze there was. They scored the first goal in the opening seconds, but North soon replied through Hardy. There was little more scoring done for the quarter with Footscray getting another goal towards the end. Many errors were being made, particularly by Footscray who had wasted the wind advantage. In this quarter Rawle was cautioned for downing former team mate Grierson.
North took charge in the second quarter kicking five goals to two and leading by 20 points at half-time. Lawson of Footscray went after Barker, the North follower throwing an uppercut in retaliation that just missed. Banbury was trying to win the game single-handedly for Footscray.

The second half of the match was dominated by North, who added six goals to three and ran out easy winners.

NM 1.3 6.10 9.13 12.14-86
FOOT 2.1 4.2 5.5 7.9-51

Goals: Moran 5, Hardy 3, Miles 2, Hawkins, Carpenter.
Best: Hardy, Barker, Rawle, Moran, Gardiner, Cave, Jones, Cornall.

This was the beginning of North's golden age in the VFA. If not for the war they may have won five or six premierships in a row. But the VFA went into recess in 1916-17 when North were still head and shoulders above the opposition, proving this by winning the 1918 flag and just failing to win the 1919 one.

if they are ordered (would know by the end of the year, early next year) would cost (if you all would like to buy one) $80 total (including shipping).

yes i dont have Jason McCartney number here, but a number 5 jersey will be made. #5 was my friend's number and he doesn't play anymore (but will still get him a jersey, along with me own #82 in the goalie cut size jersey).
ps when i do end up ordering them (sometime in the future) will take orders from you all if you all would like one of the jerseys ($80 total).

Stumbled across this today...if anyone has any info about it, would love to hear it. Thought process is that it's got something to do with the planned merger (obviously), but can't find anything official to back it up.

Didn't we have some Fitzroy specific membership categories in the first couple of years, or so, after the failed merger in an attempt to get Fitzroy people disgruntled with the Brisbane merger on board with us?

Yes we did, and for the reason you said. I cant recall the actual name though

I have a vague memory of there being a few categories, maybe "Legends Club" was one of them?

Good thread.

Focusing more on players in your history, perhaps you could hold this game on your board as an all time draft with 8 team if there's interest, you can see what I mean here; http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/st-kilda-all-time-draft.1083920/

Was done on the Saints board and heaps was learnt about players of the clubs history and such which could be something you boys could hold as a competition as well.

Such as Barry Hall at 14? That one was mainly due to St Kilda having probably a poor list of key forwards over the years and a considerable drop off after Lockett, Riewoldt, Loewe, Mohr, Gehrig, McNamara etc and needing to get one in. Not sure how North Melbourne compares in that regard.

So 8 posters pick 22 players each in ''draft order''. Each poster has to choose a team that could take the field. I like it.

Did you organise it all somehow e.g. via pms, or are the 8 selectors mates of yours?
