[quote="Old Shinboner, post: 31468699, member: 123560"The last game ever at Arden Street against Richmond only attracted 7,000 people, a far cry from a few years before where I remember being packed into the ground to see us beat Carlton by over 100 points. A bit sad really. I kick myself that I never took a camera to any games to take photos.[/quote]

I recall that game… really wet overcast game.. I was there… North won easily.
I agree…not taking a camera to the footy is one of my biggest regrets. Lucky for You Tube tho'

Its cool to see the likes of Larkin, German, Ross Smith and Crocker playing alongside the likes of Greig in the above clip and at Arden St. I started going to the footy in 87 so those guys were part of my early education, but I never got to see them play at AS or with the older legends.

I purchased the 2014 Season Guide this morning, and in it it says our club was formed on February 11 1969. So tomorrow we turn 145.

Happy 145th Birthday North Melbourne Football Club. May the next 145 years be our most successful.

I assume you mean 1869. How did they come by such a specific date?

Sorry, I meant 1869. Not sure how but it would be interesting to find out how they found about that date.

coming to dc area on saturday, february 9th 2019, north melbourne kangaroos 150 birthday ice hockey game.

On the Trove website, which carries heaps of old photographs, I found a photo of a basketballer in the 1970s at Arden Street.

Here is the link... http://trove.nla.gov.au/version/206528210

In the photo, he is in front of the grandstand and also shows part of the old wooden stand which I believe was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the administration building. The photo shows large drawings of North Melbourne footballers in various poses.....looks like something from a childrens' playground rather than a VFL ground!

Does anyone remember this? It was before my time. Would love to find another photo of that old wooden stand. As I mentioned previously, it seems precious few photos exist of Arden Street back in the VFL days.

Yes I remember those player cut-outs. They were between the grand stand and the social club. Don't know when they tore them down.
"Wee Willy" tried out for Aussie rules at North but was far too slow to make the grade. Not sure if he played a couple of reserves games.

I found an interesting article today whilst doing some research the nicknames of NM. The full thread can be found on the Football history Board.

The short version however is:

(a) the nickname as the Kangaroos came about from about 1950( this can be pretty much dated);
(b) the nickname of the shinboners seems to be first mentioned in the press around 1935 and then gains some currency after that but references to the NM as Shinboners before that cannot be located: and
(c) there is some evidence that NM's early nickname may have been "Gluepotters" (there's an Argus article in 1937 which names NM's then nickname as the "gluepotters" and there is a reference to them by that name in the 1990s). The reason for this name is because NM's ground was apparently atrocious and was nicknamed the Gluepot.

The full references can be found in the Football History thread.

I'm not sure either. A few of the posts on page 1 of this thread will get you to the 1880s but a quick look didn't reveal a reference to 1869. The NM Cricket club were the first tenants at the ground in 1868 (apparently).

Maybe it's all explained somewhere between page 2 and page 23. Where's Teffy when we need him?

Revised version of first Grand Final appearance.

Just intruding for a moment (love old history threads) to note that it looks like the dropkick was used far more regularly then I ever supposed "back then". Unless it's really bad footage and I'm mistaking what I'm seeing.
The only one I can ever remember seeing use it in my lifetime with any regularity was Barry Cable (when he played WAFL, I'm a WA boy). I've never seen it used as often as that. Nice vid.

Well, Gluepotter Spirit doesn't quite have that nice ring to it.

True but I did have a thought about that.

Only supposition mind you but it is undisputed that the NM ground originally was mud pit called the Gluepot and perhaps the name comes from players playing up to the shinbones in mud.

I've not come across anything to say NM were a particularly dirty side.

With North facing the Swans this weekend, let's take a trip down memory lane or the Lakeside Oval if you will… and remember the days when VFL football thrived with one on one contests which included HANGERS!!

It's so much to do with National comp expansion as North had already played two games in SYDNEY before the Swans arrived… one in a canning (we got belted vs the Hawks) and North obliterated Footscray. I can't recall if their financial situation had something to do with it but the 'KEEP SOUTH AT SOUTH' campaign bombed dismally. The re-naming of SM to Sydney and also merchandising reasons was always gonna trigger design change.

Is there anybody on the Board that can confirm whether a John Johnson played for NM about the start of world War 1 ( pre admission to the VFL).

I have found a newspaper report that indicates a Lieutenant J Johnson who played brilliant football for NM died in World War 1 (in 1918).

Presently we have only 1 player listed as having died in a World War 1 - a Peter Martin.
