Still plenty of time to earn his place, in Test cricket terms he's a virtual rookie with huge potential and we've seen him display that multiple times before. But you don't pick players on potential, you pick them on performance.

Therein lies the problem developing elite seam-bowling allrounders. Those guys are worth an absolute mint in franchise cricket, to the point where they'd be crazy to turn down the type of money they can make in the IPL. So they're playing three international formats plus a pretty big diet of franchise cricket, which makes it hard to develop their red ball game and hard to stay on the track because of the wear and tear from playing so much cricket.

Going forward it's hard to imagine there will ever be an allrounder as complete and impactful in test cricket as the likes of Garry Sobers, Jacques Kallis or Imran Khan due to the emergence of franchise cricket.
