The Non-Essendon Thread V

Looks like North might be doing a number on West Coast.

Cannot see Brisbane beating Sydney. I know they've been in decent form, but Sydney are a really good side, and besides, Sydney own Brisbane and have done so for years.

I'm struggling to see Port beating Adelaide too.

St Kilda tonight is a huge danger game for us.

Always had faith in you North.
I'm worried it might be bizarro round all over again.

Carlton did Pies
North doing WCE

If Brisbane do Sydney I'll be shitting myself.

Out all of the supporter groups on Bigfooty, since Essendon's re-emergence as a possible contender this year, there has been one supporter group who has generally put us down however small the opening has been - Collingwood. They have a real chip on their shoulder about Essendon at the moment and that really 'dominant' 1 point win on Anzac Day is the source of most of it.

I did laugh a little bit when Mick Malthouse said on the radio last weekend that Collingwood players now considered Essendon as a 'bigger rival' (during his tenure as coach) than Carlton.

Smash them Dons.

I agree with this. I'm also starting to feel likewise.

Keep in mind, Essendon haven't been competitive alongside the Pies many times before, if at all. Most of the time in recent times, we have never really been a threat to each other. One has been on the up, whilst one has been on the down. We have the '90 AFL Grand Final (which is much more recent than 1979) and ANZAC day... but we haven't really prevented the other's success.

There's a reason why we've shown "respect" for one another - because we haven't really stepped on each other's shoes. Make no mistake, a dual competitive season and finals series - and this will change. The desire to be the biggest, the best and most successful of the other two has always been there - sleeping.

Watching the Pies last night, I felt a sudden hate for them. I don't know why.

It was like suddenly, Carlton were of North Melbourne status. Just... a "meh" club that is starting to look like a small fry compared to that of who was also suddenly, our "competition" - Collingwood.

I didn't feel bad about Carlton losing tonight... because I felt a sudden urge to be better than the Pies.

I know we're not really in the "window" yet... but our good standing and form this year has inflated my desire to be the best.

I felt sorry for the Blues. The kind of pity a general shows to a peasant when he beats him to a pulp.

I felt hate for the Pies. The kind of hate you experience when you know you're up against something good. You want to see them vulnerable.

And I think the Pies fans, especially the supporters I've conversed with, most of them are concerned with us, and they have an even bigger desire to kill us off in the last round of the season. Some even expect that to be the difference between an Essendon top four spot - and it may very well will be.

Who knows what'll happen in the finals if we do finish top four.

It'd be interesting to ask the older supporters on this site* how strong the 'feeling' was the last time we were a real threat to each other- which of course was 1990.

I still get the feeling that, even then, the sense of almost inhuman, visceral hatred that exists in the Essendon/Carlton and Collingood/Carlton didn't quite exist between the clubs or their supporters.

*Not the feeling on this site obviously. No such as BF or really internet at all in 1990.

I don't use BF as the representative. It's the whole general public.

All Essendon and Collingwood need to do is be competitive at the same time. Something we have not seen for a very long time.

Respect falls into place because none of us have really been in the position, in recent times, to push each other away. The want to be the most successful is still there, but there's not much you can say or feel when your club can't even do much about it.

Even a seasonal competitiveness, where both clubs are shaping the ladder and finals in a strong way, would piss on that "respect" and re-ignite the aggressive desire to be bigger than the other, which has always been there but temporarily comatose.

You cannot use recent times as the example because we haven't seen a season where both are as arrogant as each other.

All they need to do is regularly step in each other's way, step on each other's feet, especially in a final.

ANZAC Day would really be shown for what it is if such competitiveness were to arise.

A modern Grand Final would eclipse both '90 and the way back of '79.

You thought Hawks/Cats was big? You thought WCE/Sydney was big? You thought Cats/Coll was something of note?

You haven't seen anything yet... [watch this space]
