Blightly's past it. Senile old fart makes for horrible listening.

Funny having the two old Barassi alumni banging on about total crap as usual. Blight just laying into Carlton at every opportunity, while Walls fawns over them.

It's like some sort of bizarre Statler & Waldorf routine, except without... jokes.

Watching Before The Game... Sam Lane is an absolute train wreck. Can't string a sentence together and leers at her guests like she's had about 5 chardies too many.

To be fair though, it is Jimmy Bartel.

Sam tends to do that. She was almost sitting on Beau Waters' lap the other week.

Love his perspective, even though it can be way off or odd-ball.
I don't rate the boring line & length guys: Darcy, Lane, Quartermain et al, pointless listening to them. IMHO.

I agree on those guys, except I don't mind Lane; I enjoy having a standard commentary of the game, which is what he provides.

He doesn't see the need to make big, profound statements on every player (Darcy), and doesn't let emotions get the better of him (Quatermain).

He also doesn't overrate the public's interest in him or his mates (Commetti/Harley/McAvaney & Lyon/Brayshaw/co.)

I don't like him when Carlton is playing but otherwise he's pretty handy. Hudson is the best, though.

Lane, Hudson, Matthews with Richo on the boundary would be my dream team.

He's ok once you get him out of the channel seven echo chamber, when he just calls the game and throws in a pun every now and then. Unfortunately that's not what he does on TV.

Seriously are there any good commentators? Someone who just calls it down the line. They all seem like self indulgent dicks.

Clinton Grybas was a big loss to the industry. :(

Grybas was fantastic.

The biggest endorsement I have heard was from Gerard Healy who said that although he was a Collingwood supporter, you detected zero bias from him when commentating a Collingwood game.

Zero bias aside, he called the game really well. Had genuine enthusiasm, knew when to speak and when not to, didn't ramble, never suggested to throw anyone over 6 foot in the ruck if they were out of the game, researched everything really well, just a quality commentator.

I never heard Grybas; was he as good as they say, or was it just a case of his reputation growing due to him passing?

I know that sounds insensitive, but I have no idea.

He was as good as they say.

I had no idea who he supported until after his death, and it was only then because I think there was a Collingwood jumper draped on his coffin.

After watching the '84 Grand Final recently, I'm lamenting the loss of the classic style of clipped, rapid commentary that Lou Matthews served up, that tonally moves with the speed of play. Hudson and BT get the closest to it of the current bunch, but I'd say that's what football commentary should ideally be.
