Make them full time, and make them accountable for their decisions.

Find them something to do round AFL house during the week to make up the hours if you have to.

For a sport that is a million miles a minute and hard enough to focus on even as a spectator, having umps come in off their 9-5 week tired as it is, it isn't conducive for making good decisions.
And if they do make bad decisions, then there's not much in the way of repercussions, the fans and teams just have to deal with getting screwed.

I mean, good on them for hustling and earning an additional wage on top of that. But it's detrimental to the game.

Thats extra money for them. They would have to be paid a lot more to make them full time. Some umpries actually like their day jobs so if they decide not to go full time then others would have to be trained from the scratch and more mistakes would be made to start with also the AFL might not be able to get enough umpires to go full time. A lot to think about..

A. Them, and all the other big ******* clubs just contend year after year after year cos talent will always choose big over small. Salary cap means nothing because the rich just get the riches anyway. Facts. So lucky the bulldogs won their flag when they did cos frankly them, saints and us prob never gonna get near it for a long long time (if ever really). AFL such a rigged comp really. So ****ed.
