Floating an idea here, but should we reserve this number for all captains? Tom Harley will go down in history as one of our greatest ever captains, and as our first premiership captain since the 60s, would this be a fitting tribute to the great man? We certainly owe him such a tribute.

Maybe I'm getting a bit carried away, but I like the idea of having a common number for our captains to honour one of the best.

I like the sentiment, but at the same time I would like to see whichever player replaces him make their name in their own number. I can't see Ling giving up the 45, and it's been ages since we had a gun wearing 14. I doubt Ablett would want to give up his 29, nor Chapman his 35. Let Richmond and Collingwood keep their captain guernsey swapping.

Brown has 1. I would think 2 will be offered to an existing younger player like Gillies.

If I were the club I'd of course ask the potential skipper (which will almost certainly be Ling or Selwood) if they wanted to do it before they made the decision.

I'd also hate to see one of our established players like Ling, Chapman, Selwood etc given the number. I think it should go to an emerging talent instead.

Our top draft picks will probably fill in jumpers 2 and 10, maybe even someone like Jeremy Laidler might be given number 2 from Harley. Mitch Brown was our top draft pick last year and was given number 1.
As for other clubs who have a Captains Jumper only Richmond (number 17 - Jack Dyer) and Port Adelaide (number 1) have them. With collingwood it is just by coincidence the Maxwell has number 5 and is captain. Burns was captain for a year in his number 17 jumper. maxwell was given the jumber by buckley.

Congratulations to Tom Harley on his career, and being a DOUBLE premiership Captain.

Sounds like a decent idea. I'd like to think that Tom will have a fair degree of input into who gets offered his no2.

put in in cotton wool for a year or two until Gillies or Laidler or someone else proves their up to taking it on.. The number 2 worn by our dual premiership captain and heart of the club during its most successful reign pretty much in club history should be treated with the same weight the number 5 is.. it has a huge part of club history and in future legend attached to it..

No don't think anything should be done with the number at all other than handing it on to the next young up-and-comer. Harley's name is now immortal at the club and I don't think any of us are going to forget him in a hurry! Would even like to see him asked back to hand the number on too.

As much as I admire J Dyer I just don't like it.

I think players lose some identity too with number changes.
And that's important now.


i.e. Gaz has made 29 his own, jordan made 23 his own. I don't want that changed.
