Third Monday in a row that my train to uni has run late AND been diverted away from the city loop. They announce it just as we hit Richmond every time without fail.

Late to Uni again. Pricks.

Anyone else been systematically screwed like this?

Good thread.

Since I got my car down to Melbourne my travel time has cut in half AND i'm saving money on petrol as opposed to a daily zone 1 and 2 ticket.

The trams seem to work pretty well but the trains are ****ed. Which really should be the other way as trams are very dependant on localised traffic whilst the trains have the lines all to themselves.

The last five weeks have been awful. There has barely been a day where I've not had a train cancelled or delayed by at least five minutes.

Still, I've spent at least an hour a day on trains on a daily basis since 1996, and they're better in terms of speed, frequency and reliability than they used to be.

The passengers, though, are so much worse. How damned hard is it to carry a tissue rather than snorting the whole bloody trip? Or to put your massive school bag between your feet rather than blocking the whole aisle? Then there's bikes and loud music and BO and argh!!!

Getting from from Etihad.

Catch a train to flinders (wait there for 20 mins)
Swap to a train that goes to dandenong (wait another 10 mins or so whilst it waits for another trainload from Southern Cross)
Get to Dandenong and wait 30 mins for a ****ing cranbourne train.

Once it has taken me over 3 hours to get home, a trip which should take an hour.

>buy myki
>attendant tells me top up with $30 to cover cost for a trip to Melbourne and return
>track works so have buses instead of trains
>never used myki before so don't know where to swipe it
>oh well, board bus anyway
>driver doesn't give a shit
>now have $30 on a myki card I'll probably never use again

Easy reason they do it. Costs them less. The way the fines are worked out skipping stations is cheaper than arriving late. Although sometimes it's genuine

You can complete the form to apply for a refund.

Yeah had this happen this morning, train was delayed by 5 minutes which I'm pretty used to, but then it basically stopped then crawled through camberwell and auburn, ended up taking an extra 10 minutes.

Catch the train before?
not really the point. they give you a timetable and then hardly stick to it.

i don't buy into those posters at the stations because i refuse to believe that 85%+ of their trains on time. certainly not during peak hour which is really when you need them running on time.

in the four weeks i was using metro down i caught two trains each day each direction and i reckno less than 50% of those trains were within five minutes of the timetable.

I guess 3 trains in a row on a monday being late/changed is showing a trend. Until they fix it or show signs of improvement just catch the earlier one. I have to catch a vline each morning. If I miss that I miss work. So I catch a tram 1 earlier then I need to. This allows for any issues.

Having worked in public transport, it is common knowledge that people who whinge on talk back radio, letters to editor and on internet forums about public transport are the very same people who day in day out make the public servants life difficult and creates the sought of issues that cause why services run late or over full.

Worse is when they decide to skip stations to meet their performance targets. "on-time" is within 5 minutes I believe.

Myki is a piece of #$*& system that the devil has implemented to ready us for the apocalypse.

Every time I come back to Melb and head to the city I completely forget I need one of these Devil Cards and get hammered in buying another one. And those Metro employees are straight up useless. Without generalizing them all, I have interacted with 6 in the past two years and all six were bordering on clinically stupid.

I have no idea why a temp system cannot be implemented. Buying a card is every time is a rip off. When my USA friends ask me how to navigate the public system in Melbourne, I tell them rent a car and given them the number for Citylink!

several years back, I had returned to Melbourne after a month of holidaying overseas, the last stop was a week long visit to London which was my first time there

Monday morning... on the train heading back to my job in the city, and i'm wondering whether i should do the whole Working Holiday thing and go back to London later in the year for a year or so.... train stops between stations, just before reaching Burnley... for an hour... occasional announcements here and there about some issue i can't recall and that we would be on our way shortly.... commuters pissed off and using the emergency intercom asking the driver if he is going to pay them for lost wages...

i'm thinking to myself..."this would never happen on the tube, that's it, i'm sold, i'm moving to London!"

and i did

Oh wow, you've actually made it so you must have a Myki to take one trip. You chumps.

Still, if you're a regular train user Myki is pretty straightforward.

Good that 'us against them' attitudes aren't strictly the domain of SA and WA, though.

I must be the opposite to you, FootyJunkie.

I needed to take a tube and an overland and bought a ticket that was only valid for one, despite being the same price as the one I could use on both. Set off the alarms exiting the station and immediately thought '**** it, I'm going back to Perth where there is no PT' - which I was conveniently doing shortly after anyway.
