How long does the independence movement give it before they push for the referendum

Very sad for the family but 96 is a hell of an innings!

Certainly was far from perfect but seemed to perform extraordinarily well as a monarch, especially in her early years when it was all thrust upon her very quickly.

Pretty amazing effort. 70 years as head of state. Second only to Louis XIV in France who lasted 72 years.

Can he abdicate to William? 73 is pretty old to begin a rein as head of state.

He can but he won't. He's been waiting his whole life for this.

Yeah I guess I'm saying I think he's only got about 10 years left haha. And when he dies I don't think there'll be anywhere close to this focus on it, as you say.

Oh yep. He's got some longevity in his genes, wouldn't be surprised to see him go another two decades.

There might be a spike of interest again with William because they're 'cool' Royals, but in a very different way. And even that I can't see lasting for long unless they do something wild with it.

Yep. Not in England perhaps but the Scots want out, I think we'll move on. I'd be amazed if Canada/NZ don't move on either.

Australia exiting the commonwealth is an inevitability. I expect it will happen in my life time (I am currently in a mid life crisis).

Why would we leave the Commonwealth? I think we'll become a Republic but stay in the Commonwealth (like India and SA).

India & SA still rely heavily on UK. We are a completely independent country, we don't need the commonwealth anymore. I expect any independence movement will involve leaving the commonwealth if and when it does happen.

They're becoming a bit of a walkover for us hahaha. Back in Victoria in 2026 because nobody wanted them this time around....

Son/grandson of British immigrants so less republican than most people my age. Grown up in a monarchist family. Probably the last of the royals that always carried herself well, a largely uncontroversial existence.

Can see why the republican movement will now ramp up in years to come
