Who's the guy getting into New York? Is it a character from the series or a brand new one?
You mean Eddie Redmayne? He's a new character. This is set in the 20's.
He's not a new character. Well kind of.

Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander who is the author of the book, Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. That book is one of the books the student at Hogwarts often have to buy if they are doing particular subjects etc. The book and it's author is referenced quite a few times throughout the book series.

So this movie is based on Newt Scamander and his adventures which led him to write the famous book Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them.

HP geek.

I meant new character in the sense that his character has not appeared in any previous work. But yes, his name has been mentioned.

Oh right, makes sense.

I'm unashamedly a HP geek as well. Outside of this new movie I only discovered was being made, yesterday haha.

Has anyone done sail Croatia? If so how was it?

I am seriously considering going to Europe for 3-4 weeks in July and sail Croatia is something I am keen to do! Never been overseas by myself so it would be a new experience (other times I went to Europe was with my ex). Thinking about Spain/Portugal/Southern France as other destinations

I worked for Contiki for a year doing the Greek Islands. If you want to party and have a ridiculous time. Do the Greek Islands! :)

Yeah, you sound like a huge fan. :p;)

How did you not know it was coming. Ive been waiting like a year. Sahhh excited.
Because it's not really Harry Potter. Just an excuse for the yanks to become relevant in the HP world. Kind of like how they changed the title of the first book for the Americans.

Except that the script for this was written by JK Rowling?

And Redmayne is British?

It's set in New York but that doesn't make it American.

Yeah, the Sorcerers Stone and the Philosophers Stone.

It's set in America but Scamander is British and obviously played by a British actor in Redmayne. Im so keen for it. I just love the HP world and hopefully we see more stand alone HP films.

You could tell quite a few tales. The Global Wizarding War which took place in 1945 and ended with the legendary duel between Dumbledore and Gridelwald would make a cool movie.

Or maybe a movie about the creation of Hogwarts with Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff way back in the early middle ages.

And this was my point from yesterday. People moan that making Harry Potter movies lacks creativity, but making engaging and fascinating movies about the subjects you've just mentioned would be great movies and would take a huge amount of creativity. Just because the original idea from JK Rowling already exists doesn't make the ingenuity to create these movies any less.

Was America ever present in the 7 books?

She may have written it but it's because there's this giant market she didn't tap into.

I'm sure we'll agree to disagree on this but if he doesn't travel to New York, I doubt this gets made.

Present as in mentioned? Yes I believe it was mentioned a bit.

I have no doubt Harry Potter movies would have been made and as you say this taps into an area of the Wizarding World we haven't seen before so not entirely sure your point. If you're suggesting the movie was made purely as marketing to Americans because they don't like Harry Potter you're insane as this series was huge around the world.

It's fantastic. I did one on an actual yacht and not one of the massive party boats and it was still an epic time! You cant fail going to Europe and doing any of the sail Greece/Croatia/Turkey trips or any of the Contiki/Top Deck tours. They're all good fun

Of course Scamander is British (and therefore needs to be played by a British actor). My point is that it's not set in Britain but rather in the US for a very deliberate reason. I hope the movie is great but the motives behind it irk me.

Yeah plenty of movies to be made. I'd prefer books of those things you speak of though. Always found the books to be far more enjoyable (which is very rare for me).

What deliberate reason? Again, if you're trying to suggest the movie was made to appeal to Americans because the other movies somehow did poorly in America then you're way off base. It's to explore an entirely different wizarding world and set it distinctly apart from the HP series so far.

Yeah not sure what you're getting at. JK Rowling could have walked into any movie studio in the world and said... I wrote a script. It's a movie set in my HP world but not about Harry Potter, will you make it? Every movie studio would have said yes before she finished the sentence.

HP is a worldwide phenomenon. It holds all kinds of book records and the movie series was outrageously successful making billions and billions of dollars.

It could have been set anywhere and it gets made.

Was it? I don't recall America being mentioned or referenced at all throughout the series. Happy to be wrong but the whole thing was set in Britain and only really mentioned abroad (Albania for instance) in Europe from memory.

They're marketing to Americans, not because they didn't like HP but because they're now giving them a platform into the series that makes it their own.
