States run primary and high school. The cuts in education are at tertiary level and the HELP loans now being matched to reserve rate is a pretty low money grabbing scheme. Seriously though with 72 fighter jets and no more bulk billing we better invade some f*ckers soon!

Unis will be able to set their own fees soon enough though and that will take care of that. Any students whinging about fee increases are kidding themselves.

Universities are businesses you realise this? If a business is no longer capped on the price they charge do you think they will lower the cost of what they offer?

TBH the budget is basically what you'd expect from a hard right conservative, which is what Abbot is

Which basically goes something like this: **** everyone else except big business. **** the middle class, **** young people, **** education, **** renewable energy, etc etc etc. Oh, and better spend far more money in defense than you actually need, coz we need tanks and jets that won't do jack shit

US republicans should come over here, they might actually get voted in despite being crazy, we voted these in

Politics is boring.

You cant do anything about it. My one vote changes nothing. The only way you can personally do something about it by getting involved and going out and changing peoples minds and winning votes etc.

Im not gonna do that. So I have one vote to change the country. Yeah pretty pointless.

Unless you live in a seat that could swing a single vote means nothing. It's a popularity contest most the time and even the bigged knob managed to win because of the high school style drama going on at Labor. Nothing to do with policies at all!

That's not what I said, I think they'll raise it.

However like any business they'll want to be competitive, there'll be a medium that is met between quality and price.

US republicans will probably get in at the next election given what a shit job Obama has done.

Both Labor and Liberal were unelectable

But one of them had to win it

Yep. Do not like Abbott as a person. Actually voted first preference Greens (gasp goes Cruyff), but I'm in Hockey's seat so meh.

Obama is bad, but the republicans are so much worse that they actually will **** it up themselves. US elections aren't about anyone winning it anymore, it's whoever loses it more that won't be elected

We are slowly turning into the US democracy, campaign donations from corporations and billionaires are getting a little outta hand. Rupert Murdock is having a pull on the Libs here and he's actually succeeding, he tries very hard with the republicans in the US and it doesn't work, coz at least enough people see through their BS that they don't get voted in

It is not like any other business because universities and their degrees have national & international prestige. A Vic Uni law degree vs Melbourne Uni law degree for an 18 year old to chose between wont be because of price thats for sure!

Also you said "Unis will be able to set their own fees soon enough though and that will take care of that" but then say you think the costs will raise? The cost of of the HELP loan is increasing also. So what exactly is being taken care of?o_O

I'm not sure what you're asking. They're raising fees so they'll be able to cover their costs. That's what will be taken care of.

In terms of HECS loans, students will have to pay more than the 40% they currently pay for their Uni degree. Big deal.

I'll keep it simple.
-the govt reduces universities funding
- the govt raises the cost of university loans for students
- universities can charge what they like for courses soon to cover loss of funding meaning larger uni debts for students
- the govt makes money on increase in loan amounts and interest on loans whilst still cutting funding

Wont effect the Liberal seats as mum and dad will pay for course straight up more often than not

They're gonna have to let pharmacists prescribe certain medications if they want to start charging for GP visits. I have 2 or 3 regular scripts that I need to occasionally visit a doctor to renew - why should I pay when I am just going for a prescription and I know what I need? A Pharmacist can do that. Idiots.

Universities is one of the Australia's greatest "exports", the amount of money we make outta internationals coming over for our educational system is incredible

This will put an end to that I guess

No it won't. I'm at uni, internationals (or more specifically their parents) are generally incredibly well-off, which is why they can afford Australian universities in the first place. Increasing the overall cost of a degree by a couple of grand is almost irrelevant when your parents earn millions.

The increase in cost of degrees wont effect those who pay up front as redalert says whats a few thousand to them. It's those taking out a loan from the govt that are hit by this

Not all the internationals I've come across, I'd say 2/3 of those I've met have their parents working their butts off back in their home country just too try to fund their kid's education overseas which they believe to be significantly better than what they have in their homelands, which is why they send them over at all cost.

Say a lot of Chinese people, you get international Chinese students whose parents are super wealthy yeah, but they are far rarer than Chinese students who are really struggling to make ends meet but their parents send them over because they don't want their kids receiving the brainwashing nationalistic "educational" program that is the Chinese educational system, which basically exists to make more "patriotic" workers for the communist government

HK people have a lot of kids sent overseas because their educational system is a complete joke

Not to mention the Malaysians

If we get far more expensive than we have (and we are already bloody expensive), then they'll simply send their kids to other countries like the US

SM are your parents high income earners?

Dad's unemployed so glad that there's the $10,000 incentive, and Mum does alright.
