Re: 2012 Trade Targets

Someone on this thread said that we should be exploiting the fact we are a team on the rise during trade periods over the coming years.....i agree with this

On the flipside to this, identifying the needs of other team and identifying opportunities that are win/wins for both teams is where we should be looking.
ie, Grant/Schwass was a win for both teams

Is the team on the decline, beginning a rebuilding process, peaking or just beginning as a club?

To me, trading someone like McIntosh to a team like Richmond, who are in a similar position to us in terms of rebuilding is probably not going to get us what we need.

Maybe looking towards a Geelong is the way to go.

Alternatively, Gold Coast provides real opportunities. GC have done a great job with Stanley and Iles. There are a few on our list that could contribute up there while their kids rise. There are so many good kids there, some will look at other clubs. We need to be there, ready with open arms.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I'd hazard a guess that you used the word 'star' a bit needlessly. He isn't a star.

Yeah alright, he's not a star. I do think he'll be a very good footballer though. Can't see the Dogs parting with him. Especially after losing Harbrow.

Chasing Josh Toy hard is my favourite option so far.

FWIW I haven't given up on Richo playing a very important role for us in the future.

GC's Trent Mackenzie - Imagine....

Imagine this guy wanted to come back to Melbourne next year. What would we (NMFC) offer up to secure his services?

Personally, I'd give up a first round draft pick & even throw in a semi-experienced player. T Mac is gonna be a phenomenon.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I know this is going to sound weird coming from a dockers fan. Dockers and trade week dont exactly go hand in hand but heres what I think...

I dont think you guys need to trade, not this season anyway. your drafting like freo since 2008 has been very good.

If Harvey retires at the end of the season, At least you got swallow and Ziebell. I have seen these 2 tear up teams when given the chance.

Your key position stocks are ok.

Overall you got the "foundation", you got a good core of players, now build up on it.

If your going to trade, until you get in top 4, even then its risky.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I haven't given this a heap of thought, but who was the last Premiership side to not trade for a few senior players?

Collingwood went after Jolly, Ball and Brown.
Cats got Ottens.
Hawks Dew, Guerra, Gilham.
WCE Stenglein, Chick
Sydney Hall, Bolton, Jolly, Davis

I agree that developing kids to form a nucleus is absolutely vital, but recruiting players to compliment the side and build depth can result in Premierships if surrounded by the right players. I guess the question is whether the timing is right?

good post there.

Trading when your going for the flag is risky but its a 50-50 chance whether it will work.

Oh and the teams before that was
Port power: Traded heavily to get Byron pickett from your mob and Damien Hardwick from essendon: it worked

Brisbane: got Pike from North As well. it pulled off

Freo made the pre-lim in 2006 and traded Heavily to get Chris Tarrant and Dean Solomon it didnt pull off.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

Paul Duffield?

Not sure how highly he is viewed over in Dockerland, but I rate him. 26 years old, averages 17 possies, 4 tackles and is a good defender with good disposal by foot.

Of course I'm not aware of his contract status and if Freo would give him up/how much for, but is a decent player imo.

edit: Resigned in February this year according to footywire news article, and
"We are delighted to have Paul and Chris commit to the club because they are both young leaders and very important players," Fremantle general manager Brad Lloyd said.

Oh well.

No chance you will get Duffield. His career would of been gone around 2008 or 2009 but Mark harvey gave him one last chance hasnt looked back since. Hes one of our main kickers in defence. Hes a good half back flanker and hes a local wa lad.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I have been hearing danyle pearce and Shaun Mckernans name being mentioned here.

How much do North Melbourne rate Lindsay Thomas on here?

I went on the Crows board a month ago and I asked them if they wanted him, one said no as they wanted a forward pocket not a running half forward flanker. Crows might be interested in one of your ruckmen though.

Im probrably going to be shot on here... Would a straight swap between Danyle Pearce and Lindsay thomas be a fair trade?

Theres a good chance Daniel motlop will leave the club and they might need a forward flanker to replace him.

Pearce on the other hand might be a good addition on a wing or forward flank For North. Hes 25 and got over 100 games under his belt.

I dont know how much Mckernan will be worth. But If Phil Davis goes to Adelaide instead of Taylor Walker, Mckernan wont got easily.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

If Adelaide want to unload all their good players...there are a few there that would be great.

Knights, Vince, McKernan, Reilly etc. Id have them

Vince would be awesome for us. At his best he is a jet.

What can you tell me about Ibbotson?

Knights isnt really what we need, McKernan would cost too much, and I think we are developing our own Key forwards/ruckman. Reilly...na.

Vince, i would be keen fr if he was at his best but I watched the game last week and he was horrendous.

If Vince was at his best he would be an untouchable.

At least this way we might have a way to get him

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

But if he's no good anymore why bother?

He is still young and we've seen his best which was terrific - he may be struggling in a crappy side - these are the kind of trades we used to do very well in under Pagan. Fresh start for a player who really needs a clean slate, and a club with good culture.

Knights is battling, Reilly is shit. Vince is a front runner. Still haven;t seen McKernan do anything. Adelaide fans I know would be glad to see the back of all of them, one way or another.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I cant see the suns unloading any of their kids unless they want to move home. The same with interstate teams. Guys like Vince wont be available as I cant see a new coach letting him go.

In reality Id suggest the number of players moving will be pretty limited and if any are of quality then its going to come down to what youve got to offer. Teams on the fringe of a flag ie Carlton will go hard at these guys in trade week.

Not sure what weve got (other than H) that will attract attention. And Im not sure if handing over our best draft picks is the answer. If we were 4-6 on the ladder then maybe to give us a boost, but we're probably 2 years away from that.

North will be quiet during trade week.

Fair call, and if we pick him by some chance I won't be microwaving my membership. My only issue is that his efforts recently have been poor. He's shown a few years back that he has ability.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

We don't need to make any trades unless we can get Kurt Tippett, who will be the next Petrie, or a star HBF. Wouldn't overpay for anyone.

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

interesting to see Reilly's name come up, as he is from melbourne and supported the roos as a kid :thumbsu:, not sure if we would go after him, but his contract is up i think

I supported north as as kid. Does that mean I'm a chance?:p

Re: 2012 Trade Targets

I think we should really go after Vince. His best is super and yes he's current output is shite. But you can tell he is a player down on confidence, lacks faith in the clubs current state. I mean that with no disrepect because I actually like the crows. But alot of there players are running around like headless chooks not giving a rats arse about results ATM.

Vince is still at an age where he can improve further, and a new club and scenery could be just what he needs. So yes I would like the club to chase Vince. With McKernan, although it would be nice to see him run around in the blue and white like his brother did. I just can't see any sense in it. We are set with KPP's and I really haven't seen Shaun show something super so that is a no-no because we don't need anymore KPP's ATM. Especially as he wouldn't come cheap.

Vince is the one I would chase from the crows (Dangerfield would be nice but I think he will stay there)
