The Offspring...

Me and a mate were havin' an argument the other day about American punk-rockers 'The Offspring'.

He thinks that their newer stuff, like 'Original Prankster', 'Million Miles Away', 'Pretty Fly For A White Guy', and 'Go And Get A Job' is their best stuff.

I am in the school of thought which thinks that their best stuff is their older stuff, like 'Self Esteem', The Kids Aren't Alright', 'All I Want', and 'Come Out And Play'.

Anything past Ixnay Off the Hombre is crap in my opinion...like Americana and Conspiracy Of One.

Smash and Ixnay Off The Hombre are where their best music originates from in my opinion.

Anyway, which do you think is better, new or old Offspring?

Their new stuff is great, but in terms of overall quality none it compares to Smash. Virtually every song on Smash was brilliant.

Didn't they have a couple of albums that came out before Smash? I believe the very early stuff was a bit average.

Their old stuff is WAYYYYYY better. Smash and the album before it (Ignition) are both great. They have become some sort of novelty act now, like the Presidents of the USA or something

Aren't the new songs just recycled versions of their own riffs (which were sometimes recycled from other bands' riffs)?

The novelty, or so-called "humour" of the band rounds it all out... McPunk for the McEasilyAmused.

How anyone can like new offspring is beyond me.
Its trashy, commercialised, punk rock for the masses. They decided to heck their old fans just to get more money and more commercial success. The Offspring is the TRUE meaning of the word sellout.
Their older stuff is soooooooooooooo much better. Ignition and Smash are great albums. Ixnay is the sign of the band turning crap....Americana was alright - had some good songs on it...but the new cd is the worst piece of trash cd i own.

I can only laugh at people who only listen to punk music. I know people who listen to punk because they think it isn't 'commercial' - man. thssst. Punk is soft. Soft soft soft soft.

Most of today's punk music is a notch up from teeny bopper music.

My favourites were 'Self Esteem' and 'Come out and Play'.

Punk is one of the most commercial styles of music around.

Look at the amount of once reasonable bands that are now teenybopper girl favourites: Blink 182, Offspring, Bodyjar, Green Day. There are others as well.

There was a stage when Blink kicked arse, mind you that was a fair while ago...but now they are the biggest joke of a band around. Their live shows are a disgrace to live music. Id like to know who thought it would be a good idea at the big day out in adelaide for them to play only 5 songsi in their set, and just crack jokes the rest of the time. What a waste.

Offspring are just as bad....turned completly commercial. They once were the kings of punk rock...now they are they are a laughing stock. Anyone that has heard Conspiracy of One (i was dumb enough to buy it without listening to it) knows just how dissapointing it is.

Green Day - well they used to rock....they havent gone completly commercial, but they are moving in the right direction.

Having said that....their are a lot of punk bands out there that just rock...play it how it should be played, and dont go commercial. I watched Wheres The Pope? on the weekend, and they were dynamic in their performance... they played it how it should be played - fast, hard and no holds barred. other bands like Amen, Ensign, Black Flag, strife who play the hardcore punk/straightedge type music havent gone commercial and their stuff sounds twice as good as the commercial punk out anyway.

Punk, Boy bands, and fellow rap (im not racist, thats what they call it) are the most commercial types out at the moment.

Definately their old stuff...in my opinion they've progressively got worse with each CD since Smash. Smash was top notch, Ixnay not far below, Americana average and now COO is crap. Oh well I don't really listen to punk rock anyways.

In some circumstances you are correct. But..really..you must only listen to the bands that are now mainstream.

How about you get off your arse and find some bands that aren't so mainstream. BTW - Just because some goes mainstream doesn't necessarily make them crap.
