The standard has come a long way since that first season though.

The league has well and truly moved past the days where ageing superstars can come in and dominate with minimal effort. Even when Del Piero was here he was still brilliant on the ball but that Sydney side were trash and his complete lack of mobility was a big part of that.

Dwight Yorke was 34 when he came to the A League and did well for Sunderland when he went back. He did well in the A League although didnt exactly dominate.

Side note: Ran into him at a Kings Cross night club following the Aus v Uruguay game. He was celebrating T&T qualifying for Germany 2006.

In both seasons it's been good enough to put him at a point where only 9 players in the league have had an outright better record, and in the team that finished 15th last year and is currently 14th. It's far from being 'cooked.'
