Maybe ETH recognises what quite a few people have suggested which is that Maguire is a good player who had his confidence absolutely destroyed last season? Just a thought.

One of many you could say that about last season. Rashford was even worse but he isn't being completely written off by everyone.

I'm just skeptical about whether Maguire can turn it around at United though as it feels like things have become too toxic.

Maguire has been crap for multiple seasons, under multiple managers.

If he improves, it's more out of character than in character.

He hasn't though. He's only ever had one permanent manager at United and he was only crap for him at a time when literally everyone else was as well, including one of the greatest to ever play the game in Ronaldo. Everyone was atrocious under Rangnick so not sure that can be held against Maguire either.

Last season was diabolical but people are making that out to be the norm with Maguire when outside of last season and a brief dip after the Greece incident, he's actually been one of our more reliable players since he arrived. Not many United fans seem to remember how our form fell off a cliff when he went down at the end of the 20/21 season either.

He's a meme now though so I don't expect many fans to be able to look past that.

Rashford is 24, Maguire 29. That's why he's not being written off. I don't mind the idea of keeping him but you don't keep him as captain.

As for your next part, these mistakes are from 21/22 alone.

Sorry but no one is convincing me he's been a good player for United. Part of that was out of his control with the price tag but his play has been comical far too often.

I'm sorry but a mistakes compilation doesn't prove anything lol. Nor do highlights compilations when trying to assess the strengths of a player...

I've watched pretty much every league game Maguire has played for United and outside of last season he's mostly been one of our most reliable players. Am I saying he's been good enough to live up to that price tag? Absolutely not, but he was never capable of that and should never have been judged that way.

I can't believe I'm defending him to this degree as I do concede he's been far from perfect but the narrative that does the rounds about him being a complete laughing stock for his entire United career is actually really unfair. Its also contributed to him and his family receiving death threats.

It proves a lot. Reckon you could find a compilation 7 mins long from one season for Van Dijk/Thiago Silva/John Stones etc.

Maguire being your starting CB and captain is indicative of why United find themselves where they do (in my opinion). There's no other club in the top 4 that would've seen his body of work and kept him there that long.

He and his family receiving death threats is beyond disgusting. I couldn't care less if he scored 30 own goals last season, he doesn't deserve that.

Lol John Stones was getting bood by Everton fans before he left the club and made loads of mistakes. Thiago Silva is 100 and has made his share of mistakes but receives a hell of a lot more protection than Maguire.

Consider that out of Chelsea, City and Pool, we are the only ones who don't play a DM to protect the back 4.

How's he gone at City? Thiago Silva is 100 and yet a much better CB than your captain. Says a fair bit, no?

Says a fair bit about our recruitment and lack of DM options compared to others who have benefited from Fernandinho/Rodri, Kante and Fabinho. West Ham can get away with having a garbage defence because they have Declan Rice for example.

Haha absolutely. For the others you definitely could find a number of mistakes they've made over many seasons. Players are human, it happens.

Maguire is going the way of a few others at United in being the scapegoat for their decline in the last season and every single thing he does is put under the magnifying glass including from seasons gone past.

The 21/22 season is the one we're discussing as the one his confidence was shot in anyway, so that video doesn't really prove the point he was crap in previous seasons?

I strongly disagree. I don't watch blooper reels or highlight compilations to draw any conclusions about a player.

If you put any of those guys in that United side last season they would have struggled too. The problems ran far deeper than mere personnel.

McFred or do you mean good DM's?

Well neither are actually natural DM's so that's kind of the point Bojan is making. Neither can protect a defence and both are best suited to winning the ball back higher up the pitch. Fred is another who is harshly judged though, he suffers from being partnered with McTominay and looks much better with an actual DM next to him (Casemiro & Matic).

And if you exclude that one season as an outlier, as you mentioned, then only Liverpool and City have conceded less league goals in the other years since United signed Maguire. He really isn't as bad as he's made out to be.
