WSW crowds clearly took a big hit with the stadium development and then the fall off in interest in the league and despite that are still getting reasonable crowds, don't quite know what the argument is. The league is slowly rebuilding the trust of the fans with the reversal of the GF decision but it's still going to take a while to grow back. Not sure that's a reflection on the WSW as an organisation though.

They averaged 7.3k last season, that included their once a season boost from the derby. The year before was 8k.

Those are terrible numbers. For the A League they might be 'ok' but I'm of the belief they expected they'd have kept a much bigger core group of fans.

Their dwindling fan base has nothing to do with the Sydney GF decision. If anything, that should've had more casuals interested. Other clubs from different states would be a fair argument for that.

Coming out of covid isn't an excuse.

The NRL and AFL had record crowd attendances while 'coming out of covid'.

Being terrible won't help, especially with the fickle crowds we have up here.

Yeah agree I think the stadium is zero chance. They really should’ve given that licence to SE Melb where lot more growth in the game

In theory, there's potential for a decent sized WU supporter base. The western suburbs of Melbourne has had massive growth, including lots of young families, and it's still expanding. Then you've got the Geelong market.

We'll know more when they start playing home games in Tarneit at the training facility later this season. Details are a little sketchy but as far as I can tell for A League games it will have 800 permanent seats, 2,000 temporary seats and 2,200 standing. If they can fill that on a regular basis then there could be a push to build the 15,000 capacity stadium.

The stadium is getting built. It's backed by the council:

This partnership between Wyndham City and Western Melbourne Group will develop a 63-hectare site in Tarneit into a world-class sport, entertainment, business and residential precinct.

The concept behind it is a new suburb with a train station. Symonds Homes obviously will be the builder for much of it (WU owners).



WU have suffered greatly from having no home ground. Playing out of AAMI, Ballarat, Geelong makes it difficult to build an identity.


Their fan base will come mostly from Ballarat, Geelong and the western suburbs.

Oh definitely it's the biggest growth corridor in Australia. Still I think soccer growth is greater in SE Melb. As for the stadium i would be shocked if anyone's silly enough to build that and the training grounds and shops/cafes etc that was planned. Don't think they'll get much govt support so it's a deadset loss for private investors. Really don't understand the numbers/logic behind it.

They aren't. Imagine all the rates generated from a new suburb over the next 100 years.. The stadium is just one part of a larger precinct. Between Symonds & the council it's definitely viable. Not to mention the stadium will also attract NRL games, concerts etc.

Within 20 years the precinct will be surrounded endless housing developments. Long term it's a winner.

It's a standard public private partnership. City of Wyndham want to build a new precinct, suburb. WU need a home ground. Combining the two makes sense for me.


Whether I agree with it or not matters little as it is happening.

The WU training ground, refashioned as a home stadium. should be complete soon. Up to 5,000 capacity. It remains to be seen whether it is a success for spectator numbers, facilities, transport infrastructure etc.

The reality is that marginal parliamentary seats are not at stake, and the Victorian government is broke. So the likelihood of funding for a 15,000 stadium is bleak.

It's a brand new club. Building of facilities goes hand in hand with growing the supporter base. They need to establish a home ground in Tarneit instead of wandering around between Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne.

It's not just a new stadium. It's a multipurpose stadium within an entire precinct of shopping/housing.



I don't see the problem with it when it's a joint public/private partnership.
