Sadly Mason may never play again.

Without sounding too callous about it, is there some form of insurance clubs take out in the case of this sort of incident? 13m spent on him is a lot.

I believe clubs insure their players. Claims where they can't play again must be exceedingly rare.

Rare but in this case will definitely happen if he is indeed unable to play on. Would it allow us to recoup the unamortised portion of his purchase price? So he was ruled out in January and we signed him on (I think) a 3 year deal, so that would mean we should be able to get about 10m?

You would imagine the amortized amount is the logical amount for a player to be insured for. You sign a 50m player on a 5 year contract and his career ends after 2 years should see a claim of 30m less excess seems about right to me.

Hopefully that's the case as it would be a big hit to the club otherwise.

Still heart-breaking for him as he's been trying so hard to comeback. Has received conflicting opinions from specialists so is seeking out a third opinion. I'm of the thinking though that if even one specialist is saying he shouldn't play again then that would be enough. Just because another one said he has some chance shouldn't off-set the first opinion.

Totally forgot about Ryan Mason. Would be awful if he never got back on the pitch from there.

Would it be any better if he played in a helmet?

14 plates inserted in the skull is crazy!

The head is something you shouldn't take a gamble on. If someone said don't play I think he should retire. If it's a leg injury you would keep going but he needs to look at his long term health in this instance.

He's been wearing a helmet in training etc. but from the sounds of things that might not be enough. Initially it was thought he could be back October/November but seems a bit grim based on the specialists' comments.

Absolutely. Fiancee is pregnant as well which should put things in perspective for him. I'm sure if he wanted it he could get a coaching role of some sort with Spurs or something in the Media, he speaks well, and I'm sure the game could look after him off the field in terms of finances. The poor guy though seems driven to play because he loves playing.
