The aforementioned Pappagallo in Leederville has very good pizza. I haven't had much else from there but friends tell me the food is good (traditional Italian). Divido in Mt Hawthorn probably that next step up. Restaurant Amuse (East Perth) if you have slightly deeper pockets.

Red Cabbage if you want somewhere amazing in the gastronomical artistry type category. Forget it if you want somewhere in the I have to get a kilo of food on my plate or it's shit category.

Not a fan of Italian, but Ciao Italiana in South Perth always seems to have masses out the front waiting for a table on many nights. Which is as good an indicator as any IMHO.
