Soo city of freo have decided to have their aus day fireworks on the 28th of jan instead on 26th (to respect australia's indigenous people).

Thoughts? I saw a political indigenous elder was against it, so I'll take his word for it that thats not the way to go about bring everyone together.
Coincidentally their alternative celebration falls on Saturday rather than Thursday. And they're not fixing that date, they're going to decide from year to year what day to hold it.

Yep, thought that was overly coincidental as well. Begs the question would they have done it if the 26th was on a saturday. Probably not

I think its was more about the Mayor lining his mates pockets when they came up to him with an alternative event to fund over the fireworks.

Never seen a black person with skin cancer before. So I'm all gravy

I'm aboriginal - unfortunately inherited my mothers skin rather than my fathers. You would of thought at least 50% would of still helped prevent it if your theory is correct

Most of us have nothing to be Sorry for though?

You didn't arrive with the first fleet either but you seem happy to embrace that day

True, depends how fair your skin is... You may have a bit of extra protection but I wouldn't risk it. I'm probably as dark as the rapper, The Game. So I'm safe.

I'm no dermatologist but I know I can spend ages in the sun in the Northern Hemisphere but on a day like yesterday here and I've probably got half an hour at most without getting burned. I wonder if the lack of UV protection here increases the risk of skin cancer for people with dark skin who can otherwise spend hours in the sun without looking like Cameron Ling.

Black people are not immune to skin cancer ffs
in fact the ones that contract it are more likely to die from it due to them not getting it looked at thanks to this myth that darker skin = no chance of skin cancer

get checked people, no matter what colour you are

Perth down by 8 against Illawarra with 6 minutes to go.

Go local sports team.
I can't even figure out what sport this is talking about. All I can think of is the soccer but that scoreline doesn't sound very realistic.

Just make it the 27th of January, problem solved.
I've always thought January 25 would be fine. For Aboriginal people, it would represent the days before colonisation, for everyone else, it would be the day before the First Fleet's arrival. Still in summer. Otherwise, we need to sign a treaty with aboriginal people or become a republic and make that date late January or February.
