On the above, at least in part you actually end up having a bit of a brief 'team meeting' and the boss gets an extra chance maybe to check something quickly with you individually, but it's on your time all for the price of a carton or 2 of beer. Genius.

Haha, I don't think they will pay for that. We only have like $1500 to spend and that needs to include Beverages and food :(

We did the Perth version of the amazing race with Fast eddy's afterwards - was enjoyed by all but the wowsers who find fault with everything

Cool idea, I like that one.

In fairness to them, Fast Eddy's can be a bit dodgy.

Some companies simply don't grasp the concept of fostering social interaction between employees - things like a few after work drinks on a Friday help with morale and people who get on well with each other are more productive. It's also a happier work environment.

Our Christmas function is from 11.00 to 3.00 on a Saturday. No idea what idiot came up with that piece of brilliant thinking.

It also helps to break down barriers at work because you can talk to people from other departments and find out whats going on in other areas of the company.

Our company is spread over 2 floors. There is virtually no interaction at all with staff on the other level.

Our Christmas function is on a Wednesday as it is every year from 12-4pm - food paid for / buy your own drinks. It is without fail the most boring function I've ever had the misfortune to attend. If you hadn't received the email saying it was the Xmas lunch you would think it was just another day out. All our branches come together and yet we all stick to our own branches and have the same conversations we have on any other day. A great Xmas gift for me would be the afternoon off - I would think they were fantastic if they made such an offer.

Our individual branch one that we organise and pay for ourselves is always far more interesting and fun

Which sucks as how are you supposed to know the other people you work with otherwise?

What's worse is I have a friend who works for QBE in the city, their company does work drinks on a Friday night, but each individual floor does their own drinks and doesn't mingle with the other floors. Almost defeats the purpose of having them in the first place.

When is everyone's Xmas party by the way? Ours is this weekend which just adds to the stupidity of it as it's the best part of two months before Xmas.
Ours is next weekend so still ) weeks before Christmas and 5 weeks before we finish up for the year so it's not even a proper wind up

I don't get it

Companies that get all stingy with stuff like that shoot themselves in the foot I reckon. It just pisses people off, for the money they save they probably lose about 10 times that in productivity. A happy worker that feels valued will likely even put in extra when required, one that doesn't often wont give a ****.

As a tradesman even a company getting everyone back together every Friday arvo for a couple of beers (or a coke) is imo a good idea, helps everyone bond discussing work or non-work stuff, boosts morale and you just appreciate it.

Agree with this 100%. A decade ago I worked for a company in Melbourne where the majority of its 100 employees were new. We began in October and were so busy getting everything ready that we didn't really form a social bond between any of us. For the Christmas party, they held it below the office in the warehouse on a Tuesday. The two bosses bought a couple of slabs of cheap beer, put on a bbq which ran out of meat halfway through and had staff rostered on 30 minute shifts manning the phones. Then they wondered why everyone left during the next year...

My current work is with the WA government so they have this social responsibility thing hanging over them. They want to go to wine tasting and cheese platters and golfing, which suits management, but the workforce is made up of 20-30 year old males who just want to have a few sneaky jars and sit around talking shit.

I'm surprised you are getting anything at all with all the cutbacks going on. My daughter works for a govt agency and it's been amusing over the years watching it go from lunch at the Burswood to a buffet at an inner city restaurant

Might sound like I'm trying to be funny, but seriously give a few bowls clubs a call. We've done it a few times at work, great fun and cheap.
I did a bit of work for a local bowling club through Nov-Dec a few years back. They had a few work places have their work wind ups there. Mind you there wasn't a lot of options in a small town but I think it's a good idea.

It's good for mental health management too, there have been many occasions where my boss has bitched to me while polishing his metaphorical firing cannon that employee X was distracted or irritable etc and I have told him that the employee is losing a loved one any moment now and (under my breath) that if he mingled with staff he wouldn't be making life changing assumptions with the barest whiff of an idea what is going on.

Management need to mingle if only to get an appreciation for the 16 hours a day they don't get paid to be there. People are complicated. I'm a grumpy bitch when Freo lose.

They are also grumpy when we win though
I think they'll be grumpy if they get what they seem to want next year. Suban will probably get the Muzungu treatment (on the board)

So you would of been very happy at work for most of the year.

Bosses say that gossip isn't good for a workplace but if they were to listen to even a 1/4 of it they would learn a lot about where a workplace is at

That's what I was talking about when I said we have to pay for it ourselves. If we have it during work hours we even have to take leave to attend.
