We’re introducing a new game to the WB board to add a little bit more fun to the 2012 season. It’s called The Pieman – after our all-time leading goalkicker, Simon (The Pieman) Beasley.
All you have to do is pick five players for the season who you think will get among the goals. They pick up Pieman Points for every WB goal they kick through the year. How many points they pick up is determined by their handicap. A regular goalkicker like Gia has a low handicap but infrequent goalkickers like Morris or Markovic and fringe players, recruits and rookies who might not get a game in 2012 have much higher handicaps. This means there’s a bit of skill in selecting your team – it’s not necessarily best policy to go for the usual suspects like Gia, Jones, Grant, Griffen, etc.
As an example let’s say you have Gia (hcp=3), Sherman (5), Hargrave (16), Jones (5) and Tutt (9) as your team. In a match they kick goals as follows – Gia 2, Sherman 0, Hargrave 1 and Jones 3 while Tutt wasn’t picked to play. Your score for that round would be calculated as:
Gia 2 x 3 = 6
Sherman 0 x 5 = 0
Hargrave 1 x 16 = 16
Jones 3 x 5 = 15
Tutt 0 x 9 = 0
TOTAL SCORE = 37
Each week we’ll post the weekly winners and the overall leader board for the season.
You only get one entry. You can enter whenever you like but it’s obviously best to do it before the start of the season because you don’t get any points for rounds already completed (or under way) when you enter.
Two special rules:
(1) Every entry has to be different. So if someone has picked the same five as you and they entered first, then you will be asked to make a change. So if you want first crack ... get in early!
(2) Once you’ve entered you can’t change your picks (unless we decide to have a mid-season trade window, or if we ask you to – see the previous rule). So choose carefully!
There’s no prize on offer (well not at this stage anyway) just the glory of being “The Pieman” for 2012!
I’ll post the official rules and the handicaps separately below. As it’s a totally new game we reserve the right to make a few tweaks through the year (eg a mid-season window for trades). If we do anything like that we’ll give you as much notice as possible.
I’ll do my best to field any questions you have. Just post them here.
Entries are open now. All you have to do is post your five picks in this thread. I’ll get back to you if you need to change any of your selections. (But I’m not expecting that will be a major problem. With 46 players on the list there are over 1.3 million possible combinations of 5. Even among the top 22 players there are over 26,000 possible combinations!)
So join in the fun and give a big cheer for every WB goal ... but an extra loud cheer any time one of your Pieman team kicks a goal!!
