Pardon me for moving out of the SSM thread but whats our take on what the impact of such a poplular 'survey' on the politics and the constitution. Will we see more? Will the results be anylised with microscrutiny?

One thing which struck me is the clear increase in participation with age - right up to age 85 (and under 20)

and only in the over 75 groups do males respond more than females

Strategists on the right side might interpret this that they would have a clear advantage in normal elections if there was voluntary voting

Also my Daughter is in the 18-19 group where peer discussions made it an imperative. She filled in our surveys for us. (we would have put yes anyway) Its not a secret ballot which the right is usually fond of.

I wouldn't mind more surveys on important issues but am still uncomfortable on a survey where I have a vote on denying or approving the same rights that I enjoy to the lives of 0.38% of the population.

The SSM postal survey didn't tell us anything we didn't already know from the reputable polling firms. Most of them had the YES vote in the low 60s, consistently over the last 2-3 years.

Seems unnecessary to hold it in the first place. Would certainly not want to see it become more common because firstly the cost, and secondly it is non-binding.

Discussion on the merits of the plebiscite survey is continuing in the ssm thread

But I suppose it’s to validate changes in community standards, particularly where the constitution is involved

Makes your vote invalid if ur daughter filled it out......

The money could have intermediately resettled 300 asylum seekers held in illegal detention in PNG yet is only 3% of the money spent by the Liberal Government demonising them......seems oddly un-Liberal.
Makes me wonder why the dickheads called their party the "Liberal" party, it's almost like a fuken blatant lie to fool people.

It was never a vote.
It was a survey.
No part of it was valid or invalid...it was a survey.
It was designed specifically to give the NO vote the greatest possible chance to win and the result is all the more significant for that fact.

Only 3 million votes to turn around eh?

Makes the whole thing a little bit invalid
roscrea fighting the good fight one invalid YES vote at a time.

I was O/S so my old man filled mine out so there is one my bone for ya bro.

How many you up to now? About 30. Good work. Only about 820 more years to give the NO side victory.

Can't wait for a 37% turnout in a survey asking if we need a federal commission into the banks
I reckon we'd get higher than the SSM survey. People hate the banks. I think we should have more direct democracy, at least to part way influence government policy.

The political parties do these things already, but they keep it behind focus groups and marginal seat polling. These kinds of surveys clearly expose the mood of the people, operated by an arm of government, and make it known what direction the populace want the country to go in.

We should have more of it.

Opinion polls and sampling are better ways to handle these types of things.

Alot of people dont understand banks/banking reform and they dont want to, and in some situations the popular vote doesnt mean its the best outcome.

I reckon as we speak, the Noalition is desperately finding a tactic to wedge their opposition on the apparent ethnic to social progressive rift in this survey.

I don't think they will cos while working classes are inherently conservative, the left voting ones surely cant be as stupid as the turkeys who vote for christmas (Howards Battlers / one nation voters)

People are pretty disengaged and disaffected by politics, I think introducing a few more popular votes on certain things might reengage them. It also subverts the machinations of the political and media class, which is why so much of them were against it.

They were against it because the coalition has a track record for wasting money eg republic

We still have to see if anything comes of it

How was the Republic referendum a waste of money? Changes to the constitution require a referendum.

The Mateship Preamble however was unnecessary and completely ridiculous.
