Does anyone go to the big race days at Flemington?

The people I'm planning on going with are saying we'll meet up at 11.30am on Derby Day, but I think this is way too late to get a good spot.

Is this early enough/what/advice/please?

I havent been to one of these days since 1999 Oaks Day when I was a uni student and could go to Oaks Day. :$
My only advice is don't go Melbourne Cup Day. I've worked a few and it's a horrible experience. I like the horses but would have zero interest in going into General Admin on MC Day.

Oaks Day is by far the best day. Good crowd, but the smallest of the four, so you can experience a great buzz but still not have to queue forever to get a drink.

But craigos gave all the good advice for Derby Day. It's a pretty good day. Manic, but not on cup day levels of manic.

I go to the races about 15 times a year.

I went to Derby day once.

Never, ever again.

Absolute pits.

Full of bogans (the annoying type) and birds who are ditzy as ****.

Can't get a bet on. Phone doesn't load. Drink lines are massive.

If you get there 30-45 mins before the first you'll find a good spot between the mounting yard and winning post. Easy access to get drinks, food, toilets, betting ring etc.

Nothing worse than those big race days. Been to Melbourne cup 3 times and oaks a couple of times. Doubt I'll ever go again. Full of drunken yobbos hitting on your misses and starting fights.

Add that to ridiculously over priced food and drink and the fact you can't move anywhere... Why would you want to go?!?

I've never been to a race day but this is how I've always imagined them based on the anecdotes I hear.

Agree with this. My mates go to Derby Day and look incredibly puzzled when I say I don't want to go?

I ask them why would I want to. "Because it's a day out with mates where you can have fun." I say I can do that without having to pay $70.

I've always wondered when making a movie/tv show today that is set in a time period gone (say the 70s for instance), how do they get all the old cars/shopfronts etc and with the cars moving etc. Is it just a set? CGI? Green screen?

They used to have people that would go around buying this stuff up and then they'd store it until needed I think. They'd still do this with props like phones, furniture etc and in some cases cars too I'd imagine. Wouldn't be surprised if there was some green screen action these days as well given the cost savings.

I am wishing I went to the Melbourne Cup years ago when I had the chance to go with some friends from OS, decided not to go as it was a cool and raining a bit. Wouldn't go now as it's turned into an 'event' rather than a race meeting and is both too expensive and full of theatre goers by the sound of it, just like the GF. Most race meetings I have been to in the last few years have been country ones which are great fun and a very relaxed atmosphere free from poseurs.

This is a really cool video showing how much stuff is real and CGI.

What about Moonee Valley night races? Remember going aaaages ago, was an okay night.

Yeah GA.
Moonee Valley is the best Friday night, imo, casual, good setting, easy to get a drink, food and you can get close to the rail and they have bean bags/chairs on the lawn. They have a couple of nights that have some Group 1's so they're the better ones to attend.

of course, it depends what you're looking for in going to the races.
