I can't keep up any more with this gender neutral stuff.

The language you speak is actually gender neutral.
Does the definite article offend you too? [emoji28][emoji28]
Maybe you would be more comfortable with German instead of the ultimate safe space in English. [emoji4]

Technically, the definite article is neutral
We do however have pronouns and professions that relate to gender

That being said, I'm very thankful for the English, "the"
It beats having to learn Der, Die and Das :)

I tried to learn German but because I am too woke I was offended by masculine and feminine nouns so switched to French and those soy non binaries were just as bad :D :D :D

Haha I've been writing software for 30 years and running teams doing it for 20 so I agree with most of what you said.

But it's possible. The way you measure productivity in good product orgs is the number of experiments that get out there. The reports I'm talking about measure this fairly crudely as number of big/med/small experiments shipped per quarter. These numbers as a general rule drop for teams with any remote employees vs teams that are all colocated, and that's independent of team structure/management style.

The reasonably well-founded theory is that this is because remote people are less connected to each other and so to the problem they're attempting to solve, and as a result they go in the wrong direction more and miss out on short cuts which would come up in idle conversation.

It's the sort of research you can only do at a huge org because every software/product project is completely different to every other one, but look at it across enough data and you can see useful trends.

Does it apply to other roles? No idea, I haven't seen that research. Roles that are more transactional or well-specified - sales, customer support, book-keeping - I'm sure are probably fine remote. But it falls apart fast for more creative roles.

this i don't agree with based on my experience. what is this idle conversation thats taking place?

in my experience teams tend to get slowed down when they need to engage third parties or dependencies resources from other teams. beyond that if you're working with remote teams, the remoteness isn't the issue. it's the time zones. if you're timezone is too great it makes it hard and slows everything down.

but its not the remoteness. there's no difference in idle conversation in the office and chat/call done remotely in my experience. if anything you remove alot of the pollution in the discussion and get straight to the issues on a call.

the big one is the quality of resource. if they're no good its going to slow stuff down. which if you're using outsourced resources can quickly be written down to them being remote but the reality is it's just the quality of resource.

we've had non outsourced... remote resources out perform co-located resources easily and by a decent margin. but the key was the timezone was manageable.

ahh, your making me sad. i have had back for now for more 4 weeks. went to the Doc, Facet joint issues. man it hurts, including referred pain in my right leg. on pain killers, tried Osteo, hasn't helped. now will try today Exercise physiologist, and the probably Keiser training and see if that helps. if not then i need either quartazone, or steroid injections
That's a strange coincidence - I hurt my back in the gym early last October, and it toook until nearly Christmas to come good - was told it was a facet joint injury!!

Bad back peeps unite! We might be able to form a proper spinal function...

I can't remember specifics from the research, but I reckon when in the office together people are far more likely to know what others in the team are working on. Remote standups fail because people zone out, or if written then no-one reads them. If you don't know what others are working on then it's harder to help or know who to ask about something next time around.

that was me about 16 months ago, back good, then not good, then good, then not good, and now since xmas, not good, and now have referred pain down my leg. don't think its going to get better.

I went cold bubbles last night, as it was still what 27C at like 11pm and screw that, I needed to cool down...
Today is much better.
There's still bubbles on my bathroom floor this morning.
It still smells like peppermint.
I am OK with this.

Now I'm not going to go for a run or jump or do anything fast and strenuous, but just general walk, sit, stand and slow movements are a dull ache instead of a sharp stab, so I guess what I am doing is helping. Also, I am over the deep heat things as in pungent cream and gels for muscle relaxing, hence heavy on peppermint.

And my legs have stopped spasming, so small improvements and plenty of water usage and essentially gassing myself later; I am now confident enough to cook my own food again, since you can only brace so much when standing and doing time sensitive things.

gym 5 days a week
but...i dont do squats, deads or bent over rows because of a back injury
when it goes its usually a slipped disk
Haha, I'm the same, haven't done squats or deads for years due to lifelong back issues, but have done bent over rows for years with no problem. But guess what I was doing when I did the facet joint injury - bent over rows!!!

Literally just started back on weights tonight for the first time since early October. Everything at around 50% to 60%......nearly killed me, but I got through intact!

Demon probably won't get a better chance to make a Grand Slam final, Sinner under an injury cloud, with a player outside the top twenty awaiting in the semi. Can't see it, but come on, let's go Demon!!!
