David Rodan is a star. He knows how to have fun and entertain us. I'm happy was a great song to represent his attitude not just to dancing but how he played footy and takes on life. 4 x 9 votes is reflective of that.

She found a pair for her appropriately demure outfit for Tom Hafey's service.

Horse racing is NOT a sport - it is gambling, like Powerball and OZlotto.

Having said that, it was my turn to run the office sweep today. I got the form out of the paper, hit up my colleagues for $2 a horse, took the last three remaining tickets for myself and organised the prizemoney splitup and the booby prize for the last placed finisher.
In hindsight buying a tin of dogfood for the booby prize turned out to be notsuchagoodidea:(

However, my dregs of the last two picks into the lucky dip of horses proved fruitful, with first and second place. $30 profit and I also won $45 by backing my drawn ponies at the TAB.:):D

I think this is the reason why I criticise horse racing before tucking into a steak for dinner. Something about it is so distasteful. While this obviously isn't a perfect analogy, horse racing (especially on Melbourne Cup day) is the closest thing Australia has to the Hunger Games. State and media sanctioned competition where lives are risked and deaths are glossed over for the benefit of the social elite.

The way that the horse's death has been glossed over by the media and treated as secondary to the socialites and the race winner rubs me the wrong way. Imagine if the same coverage applied to other sports. If a Sydney player had dropped dead from a heart attack after the Grand Final, could you imagine the news opening with 'Hawthorn have won the 2014 Grand Final by 63 points, now let's have a look at what the WAG's wore to the big day' rather than 'player X has tragically died minutes after the 2014 Grand Final'?

Animals eating animals is just the circle of life. I eat the cow and when I decompose into the earth the cow will eat me. As long as the animals aren't abused in life or tortured in death I don't have a problem with it. It's just the natural order of things.

Animals detaining, torturing and exploiting other animals for amusement and status is not natural. I haven't seen an Attenborough doco where the gorillas whip the shit out of the tigers they're riding whilst drunk lady apes wearing dysfunctional hats fashioned out of leaves and banana skins look on.

What's the survival/injury/fatality rate of wild horses?

Isn't the counter-argument to opponents of horse racing on grounds of cruelty that they are treated to a level of care and safety light years beyond those in the wild?

I'm not a proponent of horse racing - have always been no more than a casual punter "I backed number 7 because I ate a dodgy curry last night and have shat 7 times this morning" - but what's the alternative? Do free range horses not break legs/have heart attacks?

The favourite's health was in such a state that he keeled over and died minutes after the race. Why the hell did he run? Who the **** cleared him to run? A perfectly healthy horse doesn't drop dead straight after a race.

Oh wait I know it's because rich people had a lot of money invested in him running.

The fact that the horse was fed the finest hay money can buy and got to bang all the hottest fillies doesn't really excuse that. That horse died because entertaining people and lining pockets was considered more important than the health of the animal.

But if that doco did exist, I would watch the shit out of it :p

Dateline on SBS - yanks are doing research on whether genetics predisposses what your politics ie liberal vs conservative. People were shown 4 images. Liberals a split second earlier recognises the reward image, conservatives the fear image. Interesting.

Lot of the research has been done with twins - both identical who share the same DNA and fraternal twins. Geez twins get tested for a lot of shit.

But the story introduced me to a new concept - Mirror Twins. They had two woman. One was right handed the other left. One had wisdom teeth on the right hand side, the other on the left. One had 3 boys the other 3 girls. They both thought they were conservative, but the 4 images test said one was liberal the other conservative.

How is it that Kevin gets in trouble and not Buzz for the calamitous goings on after the latter's provocative chorister hijinx in Home Alone II: Home Alone Harder?

I hope you're 40ish now and have prostate cancer, Buzz.

YAY!! I just got an alert to advise me that my 3 week thread ban from the Crows non-AFL Discussion thread has been lifted. Not that I missed it.
All I posted was something along the lines of "Dont worry, at least Brett Voss is still available" and I got a 3 week ban for " not contributing anything to the discussion" or similar.
If our mods banned me for not contributing, I'd be on permanent holiday.

I'd prefer to not contribute something here. At least I don't get banned for it:(
