Once reputable titans of news modernising their business model by becoming clickbait. Flawless strategy.

I know right. I only skimmed past the GoT article to read "7 celebrity scandals that WILL shock you!"

I don't really watch it but I occasionally browse news.com.au at work. That website had a picture of the dead character with "Another death in GOT" alongside it about 5 seconds after the show aired.

Great job news.com.au
Read the books and problem solved. Add the enjoyment of watching with a non-book reader and it doubles the fun.

I'm about half way through season 1, but i'm also watching the episodes as they come out with some workmates, so I either see people who are in it die or see the people who are conspicuous by their absence in season 4.

The first Game of Thrones book is impeccable. Beyond that the TV series is better.

Odd. I enjoyed the 5th book more than the rest. Found the TV series, particularly season 3, boring in comparison.

3rd and 5th were my favourites.

5th just cut out a lot of the chaff.. and the 4th was a bit of a drag/building block for the 5th that it made it more enjoyable for me.

Clash of Kings is better than season two of GOT. Season 2 was weaker than 1 and 3. Unsurprisingly they deviated from the books more than season 1 and 3 and it showed.

As for the books, I think they are better, if you aren't in a rush for action every 10 pages. The subtle hints of things to come have largely been left out of the TV show. For instance the Red Wedding. On re-reading the books you can see the hints of something before it's sprung, but very cleverly 'buried' so no one picks it up first time around. Lots of those are just not in the TV show.

A great show and the second half of book 3, season 4 is showing it's early promise.

Not sure what they'll do with Dany from next season since she does so in books 4 and 5 and she's a fan favourite. Hopefully they don't butcher it like they did with the House of the Undying

Mate.

I don't know if I agree or not, but the books are very worthwhile.

I definitely enjoyed the books but thought the quality of writing deteriorated slightly after the first one. Still well worth reading mind you.

It's been awhile since I read them and I hardly watch any TV so perhaps my judgement may be clouded. Game of Thrones is one of the only TV shows to ever hold my attention for a full episode despite the fact I know what's coming.

I'm probably enjoying the TV series more because I already know the subtle hints and can just kick back and effortlessly watch things as they come.
Like Sansa's head jewellery thing in the last episode

I agree its a very, very good show. The books are arguably the best high-fantasy series in existence though.

Someone on GD was once bashing LOTR for being fantasy nerd crap. That same poster is a GoT fan. So what, you guys only like it for the violence and ****? Seems a bit juvenile.

Recently I thought I'd give the books a go, but am only halfway through the first one, so I don't quite know what you mean with the subtle hints, but I guess I'll find out soon enough. Though upon re-watching the third season I did notice more hints to what was to come than what I thought there was.

Also the spoiler showed up when I quoted you, but I only saw one name out of the corner out of my eye. Going to drive me crazy regardless of what was written haha.

It wasn't spoilers. Just that one of the characters chapters are few and far between in the latter books, which is true for quite a few characters, simply because new characters take the limelight (I won't say who).

As much as I really liked reading GoT, I personally feel that either David Gemmel or Robert Jordan (James Oliver Rigney) are better.

Jordan's Wheel of Time is a loooong read and the sheer volume of characters can be confusing at times however not having to wait 2-3 years for the next episode would help.

Gemmel has a good number of novels, all great fanatsy novels and I particularly like the way he re-interprets some historical figures. He also doesnt string out stories over a gazillion pages/novels.

I've caught up with GoT now. My opinion on the show hasn't changed. It's highly watchable, but I have zero emotional attachment to it.

This latest episode had my favourite GoT moment ever though.

When the dwarfs came out and acted out the battle of all the different kings or whatever and then "King Joffrey" took Ned Stark's head off. Holy moly, I was laughing so hard. Then old mate Joffrey started laughing uncontrollably and I got caught in a giggle-loop.

Then the end happened. What a waste of a character. There's half my enjoyment in the show gone.

Wheel of Time went off the rails from book 7 through 9. It got back with book 10, but then Jordan passed away before the last book leaving Sanderson to piece it together from notes and the small bits written. Now I'm in the middle of enjoying the second Stormlight book at the moment, but you can see from book 1 to 2 of that, and even between the 1st and 3rd parts of A Memory of Light he did his improvement as an author. At the start he was flailing around trying to do Wheel of Time (particularly Mat). He's very much a different style of author - Jordan was very descriptive and buried clues / hints in amongst that whilst Sanderson is more 'action'. I like both, but unfortunately it made at times for a poor fit him finishing off Wheel of Time.

The one I've always thought would translate as a great movie is Magician by Fiest. Not the whole (finally finished) series, but the first novel. There's epic battles, magic, dragons, love stories for the chicks, everything there for a blockbuster. And infinitely better than trash like Twilight etc that has gotten made.
