Excuse me...The Master System was more popular in Europe, Brazil and Australia.
It was Japan and North America where it flopped pretty badly.
It was mainly due to Nintendo licensing agreement with 3rd party developers that killed the Master System.
In 1991, Nintendo was found guilty of violating United States antitrust law and forced to abandon some of its licensing practices.
Too late for the Master System, but the gap between Genesis and the SNES in the US wasn't nearly as big, still in the Nintendo's favour though.
