Not everyone has your options and opportunities. Its a great way for a working class kid - they were recruiting both young men and women to do a two or three hard years and get ahead in life compared to doing a $40k a year job that was their only real option. I considered going and working on a north west shelf (WA) oil rig in the recession of 1982 when I was 18 and left a uni course mid stream so that I would be assured I could get into another one the next year - based on some piss poor advise, I found out about 12 months later.

Fair enough,I was lucky I was good at school work, but my working class credentials are solid. Single parent, mixed race, council flat mother ducker me .
I was poor as feck at 18 and still wouldn't give up those times to be enslaved to the dollar.

Yeah, we all know one, i had a mate at school, he tried to jump down a small flight of stairs on his scooter, somehow the scooter rotated around and he jammed his nuts between the back wheel and brake lever. It was the funniest thing i have ever seen. Unfortunately it was at a time before phones with cameras was a thing.

I went to LSE, great school.
Definitely move to Australia over London though, better people, nicer pace and a faaaar higher standard of living.

What did you study there? I graduated in Economics here in Brazil and economic history was my favorite subject so I applied for their MSc in Economic History and received an offer for it. To be honest I would still love to study it even though I'm no longer working in the field, as I'm still very interested in economics, but these days it's more of a hobby.

I've been to London as a tourist and I love the place but it's ridiculously expensive. Compared to northern cities such as Liverpool, the cost of living is awfully higher, just finding some place to live for a decent price (I did some research at the time) seems nearly impossible!

So I just learned that Brett Ebert is our third highest goalkicker in our AFL history. If he kicks 12 more goals before the end of his Port Adelaide career, he'll be second. That's depressing.

I love rugby league. Watched a game in England a few years ago (St Helens) and it became my favorite rugby code. I'd like to work in the organisation of either event.

I told diegodcg that the Commonwealth Games in 1982 is an important reason why we got the Sydney 2000 Olympics. But I didnt really tell him why.

After the stunning success of Matilda and the Brisbane Commonwealth Games in 1982, ole Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen decided in 1984 to throw his support behind Brisbane bidding for the 1992 Olympics. The final vote was in late 1985, but Sally Anne Atkinson won the vote for Lord Mayorship of Brisbane City Council, the only capital city council in Oz that is run like a North American or European city, in early 1985. She was the first Liberal Lord Mayor in 25 years after 4 or 5 Labor Lord Mayors.

Even though Brisbane was one of 6 bidding cites, and made it to the round 3, it was smashed by Barcelona by 5 to 1 ( Samaranch had so much support to make sure Spain would host the games - and what a bloody brilliant job Barcelona did ), Sally Anne who spoke French, wowed the majority of IOC delegates. She won re-election as Lord Mayor in 1988, but when the Melbourne bid team went courting the IOC members in 1989-1990, for the 1996 Olympics, they regularly would be ask, where is Sally Anne? Why isnt Sally Anne part of the bid team? Sally Anne narrowly lost the election for Lord Mayor in early 1991.

A few months later, Rod McGeogh, a Liberal party heavy weight, who had been appointed head of the Sydney bid team in late 1990 and by now had established his power base, appointed Sally Anne to the bid team. Sally Anne then on a part time basis over 2 years, weaved her magic and helped get Sydney over the line by 1 vote over Beijing. Without the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 1982, and Sally Anne Atkinson, there would have been no Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Brisbane in 1982 was such a big deal. I remember at school the teacher would bring in a television so we could watch key events. It was on tv all day every day.

I don't remember where the last Comm games was, but I think a 1 hour highlights package on CBC was all the coverage there was.

Yep, head of Sydney's bid team, Rod McGeogh, expected to win by 10 to 12 votes. There was a story in one of the 2 Sydney Sunday papers about 2 months before the final vote, that 'leaked" how many votes McGeogh and his team expected to get and the front page headline was that Sydney would win the games. Rod and NSW Premier John Fahey weren't happy.

Not really. I almost regret getting muddies because it makes things too easy in mud, but it makes everything a nightmare in sand as they just dig, dig, dig. I'm going to buy a second set of tyres for summer in all terrains.

As for the comment about prados, the 120 series is an offroad machine but the next models went further and further away from that. The engine is bulletproof (uses the same engine as some hilux's, but the prado is fitted with an intercooler). It's like a wagon style hilux with a nicer interior and some luxuries. The engine and differentials are very similar If not the same to the lux released at the same time, which is also amazing offroad. The prado has a bit more power to compensate for more weight though.

Oh yeah, and the road noise from muddies is hilarious. Prados have some good sound proofing so it's not so bad, but my mates hilux was like being in a plane, but worse. So he took all his panels off and put in dynamat.

As for the winch, I've used it for recovery once or twice and have have used it to pull a treestump out of the ground in the garden and also to pull heavy ass logs to the campsite for use in the campfire. It's pretty cool but not necessary, I would just buy a set of maxxtrax if you don't plan on doing anything insane.

I think if I ever downsized from my 100 series a Prado would be high up on the list. I don't think I could go back to a duel cab again.

Agree on the maxtrax. They got me out of trouble when I didn't see the "do not drive past this point soft sand ahead sign" once on gunyah beach In the work ute Oops!
They saved a lot of digging! But not all the digging. Recommend never go past that point. Lol
