Yes and no. Our choking during those years was a huge contributor to the Lions claim over the greatest dynasty of the modern era. We were as good, and we proved that, we just weren't as good when it mattered too many times.

Hewitt is a step below Federer. I'm not really prepared to say he's a step below Agassi and Sampras, because I believe if Agassi and Sampras had run into the Federer/Nadal era, they'd have won a lot less.

Sampras and Agassi are/were light years in front of Hewitt.

Sampras and Agassi are/were light years in front of Hewitt.

He was number 1 in the world while they were both still competing for and winning Grand Slams. They weren't dinosaurs, they were about 30 years old and still playing elite level tennis.

If Hewitt had come along in 1987 instead of 1997, he'd have won a stack of grand slams. If Sampras and Agassi had come along in the Federer era, they'd have won a lot less.

The gap isn't as much as people think.

I'd say the Poo never quite filled his potential, but he did off the court.

However he did lay the groundwork for the behaviour of our modern day male players. Sports cars, models, $%^k representational tennis, serial underperforming.
And having typed that I say "Hats off to Lleyton!" I was going to avoid that but talking about Philippoussis makes me realise we could be feeling what we feel about our male players now about 15 years earlier.

This is one of the best. So out of character for him (or basically anyone other AD character) to have a moment of self awareness.
