You did actually see the affordability index and note what it meant? The median unit price is too high for median wage. This means this scenario is ALMOST impossible for many.

If you and your woman are on what, the basic shit kicker wage of $40k each, pay feck all tax, how does this scenario not work? Interst rates are 4% at the moment. You could easily pay off $30k a year and still have a grand a week between you to spend. Sure your not living the high life, but it's more than doable.

Non home owners have higher thresholds, but yeah not a million bucks if that is what your house is worth.

Are we seriously having an argument about the housing crisis being the fault of the poor not trying hard enough to better themselves?

I really can't #carn hard enough.

Housing affordability is absolutely ****ed no matter how you look at it.

Young and poor people in 2016 have to compete in the market with people who bought their first house 30-40 years ago for a laughably small amount by today's standards and are now buying their 3rd, 4th or 5th investment property, and have all the financial clout and freedom that comes with that. It's fine if you've got rich parents or whatever who can help you out, but buying a house on a single income, something that any idiot could do in the 80s, is now incredibly difficult and not getting any easier.

Don't get me wrong, I own a house and live comfortably and i'm going to be able to sell that house and buy another one. I'm one of the lucky people under 30 in this country who can do that. I'm not coming from the position of someone who can't afford housing.

If you don't understand and accept that entrenched poverty is an issue in this country that needs to be solved by lifting up as opposed to blaming the poor, then you're a very stupid person or you're biased because you grew up without financial hardship and haven't adequately weighed up the situation.
