Rusling returns

Sean Ruling is set to make his come-back for Williamstown against the Casey Scorpions this Sunday, with Magpies defender Harry O’Brien going back on to the Collingwood rookie list.

Rusling was put on the long-term injury list after he dislocated his shoulder during a pre-season intra-club practice match at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium, requiring reconstructive surgery.

The move made way for Rusling’s house-mate and Collingwood team-mate, rookie Harry O’Brien, to be elevated to the full list. It was the rookie’s second spell on the full list, having impressed in his four games played in 2005, after having been elevated from the rookie list in similar circumstances.

O’Brien has played six of seven matches this season for Mick Malthouse’s side, and has shown signs of developing in to a gun-defender at AFL level. However, the writing was always on the wall, according to Rusling, who is rapt that O’Brien has taken his chance while on the list.

“There is no bad feelings between us. We knew it was going to happen ever since I got injured, but he has certainly taken his chance. He’s been playing well in a team which is playing well.

“I think his chance will come – and I think Collingwood will be the club.”

Rusling has been watching keenly from the sidelines, with both Williamstown and Collingwood off to flying starts in their respective competitions. And with the Magpies squad now almost at full fitness, save Tristen Walker’s thumb, competition for places continues to be fierce.

“I’ve been watching both sides play and we are travelling very well as a club. Both Collingwood, and the boys playing for Willi, are in great form and breaking back in to the senior side is going to take a lot of hard work.

“But that’s not the main aim right now – just getting back out there and getting my confidence back is.

“I’m very excited. It’s been three and a half months on the sidelines and I’m ready to play. I can’t wait.

“I’m at least back to where I was fitness wise before my injury - if not better. I feel great.”

Best of luck son!! :thumbsu:

Rus at full forward and Harry at full back - keep these guys as far away from each other as possible!!!

Rusling was probably the brightest light in a dismal year until he got injured last year. He is a very exciting talent and a great pick up by the talent spotters. I just hope his shoulders hold up to AFL footy.

i agree... fingers crossed injury wise...

hope he builds that confidence fairly quickly... would love to see him and penders come into the side in the next month

Collingwood probably was hoping one of Walker or Hall on the injury list...that is better than 0 injuries some might say :p

Serious note, Rusling, let's hope he doesn't play for weeks to come, because when he does play, it will be due to an out to one of the Rocca's, Tarrant's, maybe Fraser's. I guess Travis has been under-performing, and didn't play last week from the 'flu', so he know has bigger things on his shoulders to keep his spot.

Rusling has plenty of talent, and could one day be a 50-goal a year type player when Rocca leaves. Let's make sure though, he doesn't waste away at Williamstown. He seems to have alot of development left still though, so I guess it isn't all bad news with Rusling at the bottom of our list of forward depth when injury free.

Why??

If he rolls in an kicks bags (pleeease God pleeease!), then why would he be forcing anyone but our worst player out? I doubt he interferres with the three tall attack.

If anything, he could bump Bucks to a half forward flank, or to the sweeper possie down back. Heaven forbid a forward line like this!

FF: Rocca Rusling
Lead: Tarrant
HFF: Buckley Travis Didak

Or you can swing Bucks back and rotate Thomas and Davis through the forward line.

Losing Harry (as promising as he has been) for Rusling is a good thing, not a bad thing, and will despite concerns to the contrary, strengthen our line up in the short to medium term.

Exciting prospect hey, look forward to the day when it happens. So far in 2006 there has been alot to look forward to and still is.

I think Rusling will ultimately end up in the midfield resting on a HFF/FP.

Imagine a midfield

Buckley
Licuria
Holland
Burns
Swan
Shaw
Shaw
Thomas
Pendleberry
Rusling

Agreed... Iv always thought Bux will replace Harry down back... and Rusling slip into the forward line.

Whilst Ruz has potential, the hype, bluster and expectation in this thread on the kid for 2006 is a tad over the top.

On what ive seen I cant see him playing anywhere else but forward and given how our forward line is performing cant see a spot for him.

I categorise him as a lead up and mark and kick sort of player, which I believe we have plenty of. Havent seen any ground level or midfield potential from him, not sure where the view he has these sorts of attributes or abilities comes from.

Of course if he is ready to go now or soon (which this thread seems to imply) and performs above what I would have expected all the better.

Being a touched over hyped though:

At least it takes their focus off Pendlebury, if only for a day.

Well after a couple of lean years recruiting (although Shaw, Johno and Swan dispell that myth) it is good to talk about our depth

Who's overhyping him?

He's got plenty to prove, no doubt about it.

Still, showing some ordinary stats from the AFL, with extended bench time isn't exactly reflective of why some might hold hopes for him.

I saw him kick 5 for Willi once and looked extremely impressive. His first Willi seniors game he had 10 shots on goal!

Whilst, yeah, she's just VFL, at least he's shown a tad more than the likes of Billy, Shak, Stone, Hall, Nixon etc..

The club is sending out moles on bigfooty to create a smokescreen of hype so as to slip the clubs greatest young prospect under the radar.
THE BOOCH.
I remember a few over the top threads about him being a future brownlow medalsit for sure, but I really rate him. He just needs the chance and the time to click in the AFL.

No one is overhyping him. We are saying he has a bright future at Collingwood, providing he stays injury free.

IMO he showed a bit last year.

Pendlebury is not over hyped but I did hear he doesn’t need the bridge to get from Lexus to The Tan for time trials.

Good to see Rus back. A game in the twos is smart palyer management by the Pies.
