Sean Ruling is set to make his come-back for Williamstown against the Casey Scorpions this Sunday, with Magpies defender Harry O’Brien going back on to the Collingwood rookie list.
Rusling was put on the long-term injury list after he dislocated his shoulder during a pre-season intra-club practice match at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium, requiring reconstructive surgery.
The move made way for Rusling’s house-mate and Collingwood team-mate, rookie Harry O’Brien, to be elevated to the full list. It was the rookie’s second spell on the full list, having impressed in his four games played in 2005, after having been elevated from the rookie list in similar circumstances.
O’Brien has played six of seven matches this season for Mick Malthouse’s side, and has shown signs of developing in to a gun-defender at AFL level. However, the writing was always on the wall, according to Rusling, who is rapt that O’Brien has taken his chance while on the list.
“There is no bad feelings between us. We knew it was going to happen ever since I got injured, but he has certainly taken his chance. He’s been playing well in a team which is playing well.
“I think his chance will come – and I think Collingwood will be the club.”
Rusling has been watching keenly from the sidelines, with both Williamstown and Collingwood off to flying starts in their respective competitions. And with the Magpies squad now almost at full fitness, save Tristen Walker’s thumb, competition for places continues to be fierce.
“I’ve been watching both sides play and we are travelling very well as a club. Both Collingwood, and the boys playing for Willi, are in great form and breaking back in to the senior side is going to take a lot of hard work.
“But that’s not the main aim right now – just getting back out there and getting my confidence back is.
“I’m very excited. It’s been three and a half months on the sidelines and I’m ready to play. I can’t wait.
“I’m at least back to where I was fitness wise before my injury - if not better. I feel great.”
