Maybe if you lack talent like your buddy Mark Stone this might be the case but I know plenty of people who got their first gig on commercial radio.

Fair enough.

No doubt the people you are talking about had a profile and were working in the media already.

Is that right?

I think Ben that some people just get lucky and some people work their way up. Ideally though if you really really want a gig in radio you have to work for it in whatever way you can. Doing community radio will at least get you somewhere and give you experience.

But BTW Ben if you really do call SEN to get experience why do you just call the midnight to dawn shows? It's pretty easy to do that considering no one listens. You should call the shows during the day sometimes as at least more people will be listening.

(i'm assuming you don't call during the day but i might be wrong.

I only call All Night Sport because the presenters give you a greater opportunity to have your say and there is not a set topic which means that callers can discuss what they like.

If I were to call during the day, you don't get much of an opportunity to have your say and in most cases are cut off after a few seconds.

Hope that answers you question. :thumbsu:

"Lefty" Dave from St. Kilda:

Clearly the station’s resident talkback-tosser caller who believes it’s his duty to discuss what ails the sports and non-sport world each, and seemingly, every night.

This morning (he rings in after the 01:00 news) he was not happy with Steve Quartermain referring to Brad Hodge as an "Test reject" during Ten Sports when he should have said something like "Victorian batsman, Brad Hodge." He saw this as criticism of Hodgey. PC crazy or what.

Then this gem: besides the cost of the AFL playing a game in Dubai, “Diamond” Dave also thinks they shouldn’t have gone there because of the deaths on high-rise building sites and the lack of compensation paid to victims‘ families. Sheeze!

On a couple of occasions previously he has begun his speil by asking what happened in a certain night’s event that he didn’t see, only to minutes later describe some of the incidents that took place.
Think about it.

He even went on one night how the AFL should have stayed the VFL with the SANFL and WAFL. How clueless. Worst still, he was hardly challenged on the nonsense.

Just the sound of "Lefty" Dave’s voice now makes me want to grab my mace and trusty police truncheon (acquired of the back of a truck) and go out in the streets looking for radical student protesters, 9/11 Truthers, or Mark Doran.;)

Hmmm, I've given the crannypeter thing a little more thought. Since he hasn't worked on community radio and apparently has a gig with the Hawks, he deserves a bonus point.:)

I thought this was the SEN thread.
Not the BEN thread.

Haha yeah Dave from St Kilda is an absolute idiot. Couldn't believe it when he was going on about the AFL should still be the VFL crap!!

Did anyone hear him about 3 weeks ago during gladiators talking about how he can't believe Carlton gets so much media attention and maybe it is due to all the media personalities being Carlton Supporters. For example Quartermain.

Tony Schubecki totally shut him and and said Dave you just don't think do you.

I have the audio of it if someone wants me to upload it.

hope it is bp tonight on all night sport.
last night mark franklin was on at 6pm and then he was also on all night sport till 6 am when i thought bp would be on for sure.

Don't know what it means if it means anything but a stockbroker mate of mine text me that Pacific Star / Sen shares had the biggest one day fall of any stock on the ASX this year
They fell by nearly 40 percent last Friday.
I would have thought they would have gone up 40 percent with the footy season about to begin .
Any financial experts out there know why and if it means anything at all.

Maybe he's a journalist? I thought Dave added a bit to the Gladiators with his idiocy, it was good for a laugh. He even brought up some good topics occasionally. But now he's starting to get on my nerves by carrying on with PC or other pedantic crap.

I'll cop that one on the chin.

Who else here thinks that Dimmy from Thomastown is not a real caller and put on by someone?
