Brander should have been a development coaches dream. There’s a lot to work with there, if you’re worth your pay packet.

He’s not perfect and has a lot to develop but there’s failings on both ends for me.

Development coaches aren't in the Covid budget for a challenging side. Only we thought we were a challenging side 😬

Well, I don't mind him leaving if he didn't want to re-sign, but to lose him for nothing, someone has to be made accountable for this stuff-up.
I'd really love an in depth explanation about what possessed us to announce that we would delist him if nobody offered a trade for him.
Hopefully GWS will do us a favour at the trade table in the future for letting them get him for free.
Neither will happen though lol.

Lol. Was thinking the same.

Can we use this as some downpayment for helping take Coniglio off your books next year? :$ :$ :$

If someone had walked up to me and asked, "Who would you say is most likely to kick 5 goals in junk time of a pre season game, when the physicality has gone out of the match, and those that potentially lack the toughness for senior footy, but have natural talent can shine?", I'd probably ask them to leave me alone.

Not going to pretend that it’s not disappointing. He never came close to kicking five goals in any of our six quartered practice matches.

Few wingmen ever do.

Just wouldve loved him to have been allowed to have a genuine crack at playing the role that he was clearly most suited to (and recruited to play)

Anyone that thought he was in anyway a midfielder/wingman has to be questioned on their football judgement imo

Interesting listening to Masto on Backchat talk about the red wing position and how much of a selfless role it is but also how it doesn't suit anyone who won't play the role to help their team. He says you can't park a superstar out there but all the same you want your superstars in the mix.

Brander obviously felt he could contribute more being up around the ball and thought his career was wasting away playing red wing.

Masto embraced it as a way to be in the side, and was highly praised each week within the club for how well he excelled at maintaining team structures.

I reckon the coaches saw it as blooding Brander and pumping games into a talented top pick any way they could, but in reality the role suits someone who is on the cusp in the latter stages of their career and just desperate to keep playing. Or hopefully the role is just straight out scrapped for 2022.
I don’t want to see it but a kid like Chessar would have suited that role. I think he has that attitude to play seniors at all cost and do it for the team. Like You can criticise Brander but I can understand his frustration after playing all your footy as tall, he’s then asked to play a sacrificial role in a position they’ve never played in.

Jack Watts kicked 5 in his first practice game for Port Adelaide too. Look what happened to him...
