OK so it's coming up to Christmas (and I've also got my 24th birthday in less than a week), which means that some of the wine bottles I have might very well be opened for the first time

So this just gets me thinking- what styles of wine and which wine regions are drinkers on BF most inclined to prefer? I'm not too fussy as far as that goes but big reds, fortifieds and dessert wines usually top my list.

As far as wine regions go, it's hard to go past Rutherglen for the fortifieds and reds produced there, in fact it wouldn't be far off to say that region is a jewel in the Victorian and indeed Australian wine industry for the heritage and superb wines produced. Overseas, besides the usual wine regions mentioned places like the Loire Valley, Alsace, and Austria's Burgenland region are well worth a look.

Absolutely agree that the Rutherglen is the place in Oz for the fortifieds and some of the stickies. Jerez in Spain does some pretty good fortifieds too.

At the moment, heavily into the French reds, bordeaux, graves, they're all great. Not that this is surprising considering my locale in Paris.

No, Wolf Blass don't make casks, but you wouldn't know that, your flagons don't even have labels.

5 Stars for picking Rutherglen, it is indeed one of the best spots for finding hearty reds in Oz and a personal favourite of mine. Also, do not forget that up the road a bit is Milawa, home of Brown Brothers and also a great aged Chardonnay and Merlot.

I'm also very, very patrial to reds from the Margaret River region in WA, so if any of you Western BF'ites are stuck on a gift idea for young Sydley....

Barossa Valley by far. Good range of wines.
I prefer a riesling or merlot.... very different I know.

I am a red drinker and prefer Hunter Valley, Clare Valley, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wines.

I prefer a Cab Sav or Cab Sav blend.

From those wineries you can grab excellent bottles of wine for about 12-15 bucks if you're inclined, like me to go for the cheapies (that way you can go for quantity rather than quality).

The bottles of wine do not give me a headache like the real real real cheapies.

Hard to go wrong.

Try the Marlborough range. Its a Kiwi label

Highly recommend the Stonleigh and Montana sauvignon blanc. Looking at about $17 to $20 per bottle

They make a very good Chardonnay. And any year is a good year.

I suppose when it comes to wine, you'd subscribe to a "whites" only policy. You wouldn't go for the "coloured" varieties, and we're all pretty aware of your distaste of "reds".

...and I bet you like your beer bitter.

If you are into big reds I would highly reccomend Wirra Wirra Church Block - at around $18 a bottle it's a real quality wine for the price.

If you want to try something a little different perhaps try a Spanish Rioja - not easily obtainable but if you have a good bottle shop nearby try one.

Not a huge white drinker but my faves would be a Frascati or if Australian then Crystal Brook Sauvignon Blanc (South Australian) or a local Qld wine that is very good is the Sauvignon Blanc from Sirromet. If you like a dry white and feel like splashing out get a good French Chablis.

A newly discovered tipple is a good Muscat, sipped after a meal and coffee etc it is delicious, has a real caramel flavour to it - mmm delish!!

Ahh Sydley swap you a case of MR red for a case of Farmer Union Iced Coffee.....

And yes the Brown Bros Port...oops fortified whatever the heck they call it now..absolutely smoooooth
