From the Director of 'Requiem for a Dream' Brings you:

THE WRESTLER

Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey.

Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life -- trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy "The Ram" back into his world of wrestling.

Its getting rave reviews, currently an 8.9 on IMDB. Trailer gives me chills, will have to see this one.

Re: The Wrestler

David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz, two of Australia's most respected film critics who have their own "At the Movies" TV show saw Stratton give the movie ****1/2 and Pomeranz gave it *****.

I'm trying to work out if that is a really good or a really bad filtered rating ...

Either way I note that the Iranians are having a good ol' whinge about the movie.

Re: The Wrestler

Can't wait for this film. Love Aronofsky's work and I see the music is also composed by Clint Mansell who composed for Requiem for a Dream and Pi.

Re: The Wrestler

ok, so it comes out on the 15th of January, yet on your imdb link its already been voted on 1500 times...

It's what they call a DVD preview copy ^
& it's been floating around for around 2-3 weeks now as i watched the wrestler close to 2 weeks ago. I don't want to go into details about the film because if i do i'm likely to give away spoilers. But it's a very good film & some people will either hate it or love it.

Re: The Wrestler

I got the fox preview copy online, amazing quality it wa 1.4 gig!

Loved the movie, thats all I'll say for now I'll wait for some reviews. Honestly had never seen any Mickey Rourke movies except for Sin City, he was great. Apparently the big monologue he has wrote himself.

Re: The Wrestler

I agree, i loved it. Very well directed. Different and compelling.
Benjamin Buttons is good too.
I can also recommend Seven Pounds, but at times you have to concentrate to keep track.

Got that one too. Spectacular quality. Just finished watching it. Blown away. Only someone who loved wrestling could have made this movie. Now anytime someone tries to tell you wrestlers go to acting school and use blood capsules you can recommend this movie to them. Seemed like this guy was a walking wrestling industry horror story sans the sex tape and topless Stern appearence. Very believable as others have said. Fantastic stuff by Rourke as well. I wondered if he was a fan as well as The Ram seemed like a combo of Jake the Snake, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan all rolled into one. :thumbsu:

My initial thoughts was the life of Jake Roberts and the battered body of Bret Hart. Deeply moving and gritty film, which, as has already been discussed, is wonderfully directed and brilliantly acted by Rourke. Watching the aftermath of his hardcore match gave me even more respect for the likes of Mick Foley, as that would have almost been a weekly ritual for him a few years back. Even though I haven't watched wrestling for a few years, it helps outline just why so many can't give it up...and the greater proportion die way too young. Best wrestling movie since Beyond the Mat.:thumbsu:

There was also a brilliant documentary on Terry Funk, poor bloke's body was virtually destroyed but he just couldn't stay out of the ring. Very hard on his wife and daughters, who had to help him out of bed in the morning... then watch him later that night get superplexed and cut open with barbed wire!

Got hold of this movie last night, will definitely watch it at some stage over the weekend.
