Mayall left the slide to his absurdly talented sidemen mostly. I had a bootleg of a 1966 Bluesbreakers gig with Clapton and Jack Bruce playing bass and you can hear Cream forming.

As far as bootlegs go it's up there with Cornell 77 or the Band sides of Bob's first Great White Wonder which was also part of the reason the Clapton broke up Cream ironically.
