I was just reading an article with Cunningham praising Goodes about his on and off field influence on him and all the other young players, not sure I ever read that about Morto.
You would have if I was writing it, Morton was in my top 3 favourite players (there's usually a heavy bias towards WA players and Canadian rugby players)

I liked him too, do you think Goodes shouldn't be playing?
Nah definitely not, it was more that Morton should have been playing.

I agree, never could figure it out and I heard so many spins on the whole Morton story but his actions spoke more than the chances he was given. He will be fondly remembered by me.

Issue is what do you replace him with? He is not costing us goals that I can see.

I cannot see a better option.

Said it before - the problem with Goodes is he is presenting himself up the line 2 on 1 against and people are attempting to use him as the outlet. Goodes either has to be told to, or just, stay the deepest player or the guys getting rid of it have to choose a better option.

I cannot imagine that under finals pressure you are going to get better output in the forward 50 from either Towers or Tim which are the only real options unless you want to drop Nanny in there.

Hanners will be back in the midfield rotation soon so Jack or MeVeigh can go forward. That will provide a lot more pressure in the forward 50 anyway. After watching some of the decision making of Jack over the last few weeks a spell forward can't hurt either.

If you drop Goodes and or Reid what are you proposing to replace them with and what do you expect them to do? Goodes has kicked 8 goals in the last 3 weeks. 21 goals for the year and 2nd only to Buddy. Pretty good return no? He is there as a forward after all.
I agree with much excep the costing goals bit. Go back and watch the goals against the hawks closely and also think about the fatigue exhibited because we have a few players who can't chase their man and others are covering.

Goodes is arguably our best crumber, although he is getting a goal a game from frees. He is getting 2-3 from genuine crumbing or forward stoppages. But he needs to give us that because he does get run off.

Reid has to stay but I do wonder whether the ruck work is making him struggle. He is not doing a great job as the loose man in defense and he still can't quite hold the marks he needs to hold because he flies at the pack and then if he doesn't quite get it he is out of the contest.

I can't see any alternative either but I do think yesterday was a battling performance against a good but limited opponent.

And I thought bird had one of his worst games for the club last night. But he's been going ok so we will forgive that for this week

The Goodes criticism is out of line. Earlier in the year we were bombing it and the ball was coming back rapidly and he wasn't playing. It is the way we move the ball rather than the personnel in the forward line. McVeigh and Bird get into the bad habit of kicking forward blindly out of stoppages. This is a much bigger concern than Goodes not being able to chase.

1. Reid is such a tease. Was playing really well a couple weeks back
2. Don't leave us Mal
3. Kicking is pretty meh. inside 50's, set-shots.
4. Rohan is building

1. Rowan . Wow.
2. The ramp's pressure last night was elite
3. Midfield got beaten. That's what pushed our defenders to pull out all stops and they delivered. Only issue was Richards on Ryder when he pushed forward.
4. To win a flag, our midfield needs to lift. Kieran Jack is a star but he is injured and is a worry.

Remember Mitch Morton was left out of the side due to a lack of defensive work. He was an attacking weapon, averaging 2 goals a game at his peak and more than Goodes across his career. Obviously the coaches feel Goodes is pulling his weight defensively.

Mitch Morton & Adam Goodes ? WTF kind of comparison is that ? Might as well compare an U11 team with the All Australian team. Mitch, for all the love (and thanks for the Granny), still owes the Swans. They scraped him up, gave him a chance and he got a medallion for a couple of quick goals. Meanwhile Goodes willed us to keep our noses in front by soldiering on with knees gone and still had more impact in that game.

Defensive side ? My ass. It was Horse's way of telling Morton "Son, your game is just not best 22". In other words, work harder.

Goodes has been a champion of this club for 15 years at a level of performance few have ever equalled. He is still a champion and still capable of more than Mitch could produce. Goodes is an x-factor, a game changer, a leader, an inspiration, and a damn difficult match-up for any opposition coach. As for the goals per game stat quoted. It says nothing of general play and, besides, Goodes didn't become a forward until his twilight years.

Comparing Morton to Goodes is denigrating both players.

1. Membrane showed more than Towers. He's a keeper.
2. Shaw adds a lot of drive
3. Tippet needs his buddy to be at his best
3a. Parker is a huge weapon
3b. Grundy. Get that bandwagon fixed. There are plenty wanting to come aboard.

yeah the goodes morton comparisons are a massive stretch. look at body tyoes for a start, small forwards are expected to apply more pressure because theyre more, mobile, agile & pacier in general. theyre less likely to mark a long bomb, so they need to offer more in other areas. its all relative

1. Rohan is showing real promise in the team with his ability to play forward, mid & back & I believe that he will be a real X-factor in the finals with his pressure acts, pace, run, marking & unpredictability.
2. I'm sorry to say this, but I think that Towers can be traded, as he ducked his head a few times. That is not the Swans way.
3. Our style of play has shown that Hanner's has definitely been missed, but with the injuries that we have had, it has really given the Swans the chance to have a look at our young players & we have certainly found a few in Lloyd, Cunningham, Membrey & Zac Jones.

Can you people actually read? Did you read baja asking me if I was being sarcastic, followed by me saying there was no way Goodes should be dropped?

You want goodes dropped?

1. Rohan is starting to realise his potential.
2. McGlynn continues his red hot form.
3. Nice win after a 6 day break and Bombers coming off 12 days. Apart from Ryder most of the Bombers would struggle to get a game with the Swans.

1. Towers will most likely be another wasted first rounder.
2. McVeigh needs to learn to back his teammates in occasionally instead of demanding the ball from them only to waste it.
3. Hanneberry and Franklin are both required players if we're going to go deep into September

Must have looked different on TV but I thought McVeigh was very good ( first quarter was awesome to getting us off to a good start ), his hands in close really stood out to me and it was good to see in rotation in centre bounces , still uses it well and there are not to many more I would rather with ball in hand on our list.
Might get cheapies around the back but they give it to him for a reason

I see he has subsequently edited his post to clarify that he didn't mean he thought Goodes shouldn't be playing. Maybe the original statement was a little denigrating to Goodes but no harm was intended. Play on!

His first quarter was pretty good. He seemed more peripheral after that. He really is one of only three players on our list who seem to know how to regularly hit a target inside forward fifty. i know its hard, but he doesnt try to overkick it - he just knows how to favour the attacking player.

The cheapie around the back is fine if you are going to use it. Getting it from Pyke is fine whenever. Getting it from grundy five metres behind him in the right back pocket and running onto your right foot to bomb it long up the wing seems pointless.

Lastly i do like him as a leader. But him going off when players dont give it to him is occasionally warranted but if you do it too often it just makes other players less inclined to do it. Sprays are more valuable if they are done only occasionally.

Might have already been said but the mids need to look for other options inside 50, on more than a handful of occasions Membrey, Towers and a few other players were free on the lead around 40 out and we bombed it long to a double teamed Tippett. We need to start hitting these guys up to keep our forward line unpredictable. Good sides will recognise the pattern of the long bomb and get numbers over to spoil.

Membrey and Towers got ignored all night ( another thing that wouldn't have shown on TV is the work rate of Membrey ) but one thing the Bombers did was push a shit load of numbers behind the ball which some time caused the long bomb but one issue when we did bomb was no quicks at the ball drop and not much defensive pressure at all.

Yeah I was at the game and I think you had to be there to see what we are talking about. I made the call to a mate that Membrey would blow up at half time because the amount of running that kid did was incredible. Gee whizz he looked good though, if you have him on the 3rd of 4th defender he could be a real headache for opposition sides, he had great skills and moved really well, quicker than I thought he would be. If he gets a tank on him who knows midfield time or high half forward could be on the cards?
