Dont get me wrong.
Im not playing all my cards on this, but push aside all the bad timing and shitty tactics. maybe we should push this one down to luck and superstition.
Round 1 carlton v richmond
We had high hopes, a new clean slate and a possible round 1 win, optimistic we were, even against the NAB cup winners Carlton. A game at our spiritual home ground, the MCG, a nice wednesday afternoon with high hopes for the yellow and black. When the ball was bounced, we got the touch. all was well, kane johnson, our leader in the number 17, had the ball. everyone looked at the telly to see what Captain Courageous would do. what came next horrified us. even though we were kicking to the left of screen, the ball travelled into the carlton attacking 50 in the right of screen. What a horrible start.....Kane Johnson had kicked it the wrong way!!!!!!!!! We eventually lost the game by 27 points after we rallied throughout the 2nd and 3rd terms. ironically the end score was 15.8 to 15.25, meaning the blues had won by kicking behind after behind after behind.
If you saw the kick you'd understand. that kick turned our hopes a full 180 degrees. it did so too with our position on the ladder.
Bottom line. We had the worst start to a season in AFL history. Just like the Chaos Theory (the one about the butterfly flapping its wings in the jungle will cause a tidal wave) this bad kick has snowballed into a bad season. but maybe like this game, we could rally midseason. hey, the brisbane draw was a start. we are improving-slowly.
If this is true we may have a few wins but another dismal season is the news. Maybe Terry should concentrate on the first game to set the season. there is one thing we know. the round 1 game sets the reality for a team after the break. it sets morale, it brings players back down to earth......and maybe, if im right, it sets the season.
