You do know he knocked back a contract extension? Said his family was still settling and will wait to the end of the year.

Sure this could simply be his manager pushing for a better deal.

This article is the reason a few more discussions are now being held about his availability / family situation. Its not just because he's playing well.
He has not knocked back anything.
He has not accepted anything which is entirely different.
Knocking it back means he has no interest. Not accepting it currently means its still an option and is open to accepting it.

Fine line, semantics even. But its also Rd4 in his first year of a 2 year deal. You blew the chance to get him and are trying desparately to get him back - especially after Ryan bit the farm for 12 weeks.

You might get him back after 2019 but I doubt pick 30 will get it done.

Must be under the age of 21
I’ve always thought it’s a crap rule
Jayden Hunt last year was a revelation and IMO would’ve won it with a leg in the air

I think after a certain age though their bodies are that much more mature and able to handle the rigours of AFL crash-and-bash life. Of course a 23 year-old is gonna be more seasoned and hence play better than an 18 year old kid straight outta high school.

It could be seen as a tad unfair to the kiddies. Maybe a 'mature-aged' category needs to be introduced?

There’s been a few players who have won the rising star and have not became a star.
I think it should be for any first year player and should have its name changed from Rising Star to best first year player
Exactly the same the AFLPA award

I've skipped the last 2 pages so bare with me, but everything I've heard is Kelly is actually more unlikely than likely to head back to WA as he's a bit burned on the fact both WA clubs constantly overlooked him and he's very thankful (and has fitted in well) to the GFC for giving him his chance to make it.
His wife is apparently doing ok down here and the club is 100% hands on and supportive.
There's a reason none of our interstaters leave to go home. None.

It’s in the wording
Star!
Out of those players how many are stars?
When I got up to Joel’s name I counted 7

Anyway this isn’t about my shit opinion, it’s about the fact a future star can start his career at 28
Their should be no age bracket

28...Wouldn't that be classed as a Setting Star rather than a Rising Star?

I’ll answer you by quoting myself

Tim Kelly will be a vital cog to Geelong's midfield force for the next decade.
He could even be a surprise packet to our contention this year.
No further talk will be entered into from my good self
My bad self however may emerge if taunting or promoting of his departure occurs.
Which self are you siding with?

I think it's either a players association award or a league wide award.

Best first year player.

AFLPA Best First Year Player-

from last year:

The best first-year player award, which has been given out since 1998, is awarded to the best player in his first year on an AFL list by his peers.

It’s why mature-age recruits such as Melbourne’s Mitch Hannan and Geelong’s Tom Stewart — who both became mainstays of their respective clubs’ best 22 in 2017 — have been nominated for the award.

Seems that there is still a tendency to go with the younger guys, but one would hope that if Kelly continues his form that he is given serious consideration otherwise it just comes a regurgitation of the Rising Star

The votes from last years AFLPA Best first year player:
1) Andrew McGrath — 274 votes
2) Sam Powell-Pepper — 250 votes
3) Sam Petrevski-Seton — 48 votes
4) Will Hayward — 35 votes
5) Tom Stewart — 25 votes

Compared with the Rising Star (full leaderboard):
Andrew McGrath (Essendon) 51
Ryan Burton (Hawthorn) 41
Sam Powell-Pepper (Port Adelaide) 35
Charlie Curnow (Carlton) 27
Eric Hipwood (Brisbane Lions) 6
Sam Petrevski-Seton (Carlton) 3
Lewis Melican (Sydney) 1
Tom Phillips (Collingwood) 1

Tend to agree , he's on a 2 year deal so no surprise he hasn't extended yet after 4 games (if it's been offered?)

Having said that the family situation will play a very strong part particularly in his situation with such a young family - you would hope the Club is all over that and that bonds form with players who also have young families.
I've seen it work both ways personally Career wise - we moved here 18 years ago with 2 young kids and have never looked back. However I've seen other colleagues move interstate and not last due to the family not settling and becoming homesick.
Hope it works out for Tim and his family

Thanks, I thought so. You'd think Kelly would be in the lead at present.
