God, how I miss Sam Mitchell. That little campaigner had that ruthless streak that Simmo lacks....

Don't get me wrong, I love Simmo, but he keeps playing that unbalanced team and its killing me. Back in 2018 we had more lads running through the guts and we ran games out a hell of a lot better than we do now. I remember being confident even if we were a few goals down, the boys would rally and get us over the line. Obvious example is the QF against the Pies.

Kennedy has to get dropped - tough decision, but I am keen as mustard to see O. Allen get more time as a full time forward, the kid is a gun and would chop up as a full time forward.

McGovern needs to spend some time forward - when the silly campaigner is available to play. Teams have neutralized him and been able to limit his intercept marking. I would love to see him spend time up forward then get swung back when needed.

Brander isnt a wingman. Would like to see him play as the third tall down back so Shep gets a bit more freedom. Schoey is still a good in, freeing up Barass to play the Gov role. Wouldn't mind seeing Shep play some mid minutes either - doesn't lose a lot of 1:1's.

Petrol shouldn't be playing - we should have traded the bloke for a 2nd round pick last year when he had some currency.

Need to get Yeo more involved, maybe Kelly should play some HFF so Yeo can get in amongst it?

Anyway, Kennedy needs to go for team balance. Something like this:

F: Cripps McGovern Ryan
HF: Darling Allen Kelly
C: Gaff Redden Sheed
HB: Jetta Barrass Shep
B: Hurn Schoey Duggan

R: Nata Shuey Yeo

Int: Nelson Brander Hutch Cameron/Cole

Gov to play some backup Ruck. Could be a way to get him more involved.

Darling to the wing for a bit? Aerobic enough and would free up some space up forward.

When is Cameron back? Would get more tackles than Petrol does touches.

Are we trying too hard to get Kelly involved at the detriment of other players? Yeo and Redden need to get involved more.

After that loss again GC, we need to pinch a win against the Bears. Its not do or die but if we are serious about having a crack this year we need to bounce back strongly after that trash that was dished up on the weekend.

AA CHB to FF and ruck, almost AA CHF to HFF and wing? Give me some of the java juice you're on!

I was wondering how long it would take before the McGovern to forward and Darling to midfield causes would raise up again.

For what it's worth my own thoughts on the issue have been raised here.

Remember, infamously, Simmo told the playing group 3qtr time in the 2018 QF, we were ten points down, that it was "okay to lose" because we have a second chance finishing top 4. After he left, Sam Mitchell in a rage took over, started slapping drinks out of players hands, told the group if they lost that game they wont win the flag. He instilled fear in the group that break. We ran over the pies in the last quarter. Simmo needs to stand up and become angry. The 'cool dad' shtick is getting old.

Nic Nat back pocket, Barrass to the wing and Kennedy into the ruck for mine.

Sam Mitchell won us the 2018 Premiership and then that campaigner packed up his things and went to the Hawks where he helped steer them from fourth to

*checks notes*

Ninth.

Source on any of that?

I find it pretty remarkable people still throw the toys out of the cot about Adam Simpson every time we cop a loss.

I know a trainer who was witness to it. Also someone claiming to be in the know on Reddit also supposedly heard it. It doesnt sound too farfetched imo.

Someone. Claiming. In the know. Reddit. Supposedly. There’s a few words doing a loooooot of work there.

Coaches have variations on “it’s ok to lose” all the time for what it’s worth - the classic “Take the game on and if we lose that’s ok” comes to mind for instance.

People still refuse to give Simpson his props because he doesn’t give players an on field bake like the manly coaches of yesteryear. The game is too soft these days. I’m inconsolably angry when my team loses so my coach should be too.

Coaching in my mind is a horses for courses approach, contextually coming up with the best approach, but if anyone can honestly look me in the eye (or the virtual eye that is BigFooty) and tell me that the 2018 Eagles win the flag without the culture instilled by Simmo I’d like to hear it. You do need to adapt it as you go, but if you could also tell me that a coach would be wise to drastically alter a winning culture seemingly to appease Internet fans, I’d also like to hear that.

Also I’d like to know who inspired the boys for every 2019 comeback and close win, given Mitchell was gone. Trailing by about 40 in the third quarter at Adelaide Oval vs the Crows for example, what rousing speech did Jaymie Graham give to fire up the lads while Simmo told them the main thing was they had fun.

No. The only credited source was an interview with Redden where he said the mids came into half time for their line meeting and Mitchell was fuming and slapped a slushie into his face. Simmo has said in several interviews that the line coaches are the ones that give direct feedback to players. This was between Mitchell and the mids.

There is no way Simmo would ever tell the group that it is OK to lose a game. No head coach is a teddy bear, I'm sure he can be tough when required, otherwise he wouldnt have been a premiership player, club captain and premiership coach. Denis Pagan is his mentor FFS!

We unfortunately have no plan B for wet and dewy conditions, just the same old chip mark which works best in dry weather. Please, I urge Simmo to plan for the wet which apparently is a very though thing for him to do. Teams are figuring us out by playing tight man on man to stop us chipping and force us down the line with a declining JK and a ok Darling as a main target, rebounding it out of our forward line thanks to Dicky McGeezaks forward pressure, lowering the eyes when going F50, avoid bombing it high to our defense, play a defensive forward on Gov and batter our mids. We lack the adaptability when times change just like some animal species that can't adapt to new weather conditions dying off and animal species who adapt survive the new weather conditions.

It sounds completely far fetched and 100% bullshit to me.

Hard to imagine an amateur side coach saying that, let alone an AFL one.

I realise you've got a hard on for Mitchell, but some credit to Simmo.
He also got the boys into a GF before Mitch got there.

Oh no, that one was Don Pyke.

The same Don Pyke who oversaw the demise of the Adelaide Crows as a failed culture destroyed all relationships and confidence within what should have been a dominant era for the club.

But yes, Simpson no scream, Simpson bad.

Nothing wrong with the classic good cop/bad cop schtick when called for and Smitch makes for an excellent bad cop.

Our selection is definitely stuck in a 2014-esque conundrum at the moment. So many quality talls to try and blood and and absolute paucity of midfielders is throwing our balance out of whack.

If we don't adjust our team selection to allow for more running power and pressure in our game day tactics we are toast. Some of the tall boys are just going to have to suck it up during the hub - they will get their time in the sun, literally!

I reckon Jarrad Cameron and Petch in the forward line could work long term. Agree with others that Bailey Williams will have to wait but I doubt JK will be there next year. Last week was definitely about work rate we can run harder than that. I don't think we are that slow we just didn't work hard enough last week.

I think Petch needs to play up the ground. Simmo apparently told him after the draft that he sees him being more than just a forward pocket. Petch is a shit forward pocket IMO. Try him as a running half back in the Saad mould, or give him a crack in Marsden's Brander's position.

Cameron needs to play full time as soon as he's fit. Kid is a gun.

Don't think we lost last week because of selection issues or players in wrong positions. In fact, Rioli aside, that was probably our strongest side we could have possibly fielded.

Too early to call time on JK, even though I think it's on the cards sooner than later. More likely, we'll switch our emphasis to Darling as the focal point and JK as the alternative target (i.e. reverse of their roles in previous years).

Otherwise, the game vs GC was in a lot of ways a bizarre game. Our guys fumbled a lot more than I've ever seen. Made bad decisions. Fell over constantly. Wasted chances. It's almost like half the squad were having their worst game of the year all at the same time.

Lets chalk it down to a perfect storm of small events rattling us (unfavourable conditions, rusty skills, unfamiliar with ground, adjustment to being in a hub, etc) and move on.

Yeah Petch isn't very accurate totally agree on Cameron needs game time.

Hated the loss to the favs for wooden spoons. Getting slapped around by first and second year players was not a good look.
But, I give them a mulligan just one.
Not our preferred conditions, new lifestyle to adjust to, thinking maybe it was going to be a walk in the park and getting blindsided.

So, I am not one to want wholesale changes after just one game. Would like to see Watson and Rotham come in though as I believe they have something to offer and will want to try prove themselves as best 22-24.
Kennedy also gets a break for his output as he wasn't getting a lot of good input.

Need to see some drastic change in how the guys commit on the field and in the contest this week but if they don't then maybe some personel changes will be needed.

Did Simo really say it was ok to lose at3qrt time?

That sounds.....odd.

And I agree. Sam Mitchell was a massive part of that 2018 flag. More than people know.

I think most on here realise SM was a big part of our win.

But that shouldn't mean Simmo gets less credit.

No way in the world would Simmo say that IMO.
