Pick 3 for Tippett would be well worth it but it won't happen.

GWS will try and flog pick 12 or 13 before handing over pick 3.

Come on, let's get real - pick 3 won't happen.

The free agency model isn't too bad. There are only two things wrong with it. One is easy to fix, the other is not.

The first is the ridiculous idea that losing a player and gaining a player cancel each other out. That's rubbish. If you lose a player, you should get compensation for it. If you gain a player, good luck to you, that's the whole point of free agency, players can move to their preferred clubs without having to worry about whether the club is willing to give up draft picks. At the very least the AFL should try to work out the difference in value, rather than simply having any two players cancel out. If we were to lose Dangerfield and gain some nothing depth player looking to revitalise his career somewhere else, I'd hope that the compensation we receive would be almost as good as if we hadn't received the depth player at all. Of course, in the current system, we'd just tell the depth player we don't want them, completely ruining the entire point of introducing free agency to begin with!

The second problem is that the AFL determines the compensation either ad hoc, or via a formula that is not public knowledge. Very much open to corruption.

There is the third problem that people have raised - that everyone is penalised whenever a free agency trade goes through because another pick is added to the draft and so every pick after it has one additional player already taken. One way to partially alleviate this would be for the compensation to take the form of draft pick upgrades, rather than brand new picks. The AFL might decide that losing Knights warrants an upgrade of our pick 21 to, say, pick 15. I'm just pulling numbers out of the air here, mind you, and it would be even more difficult for the AFL to come up with a public formula for this model, but let's pretend it could work. The clubs with picks 15-20 (now 16-21) would still be penalised by this model, but every pick after pick 21 would be no different to before, making it less of an imposition on the draft overall. Of course, for this model to work free agency would need to be held before trade week, but then it's pretty obvious that it should be anyway.

Hell, the AFL could even make a bit of a spectacle out of it (don't they just love doing that!) by giving the clubs multiple options. Want to upgrade your pick 40 all the way into 25, or your pick 10 into to 8?
I would think putting the compensation in the next year would be better than this stabby. Teams have a whole year knowing which teams have extra picks in which round. Although this then opens up to tanking :(

If we get pick 3 for Tippett we should take it and run rather than trying to hold out for a sweetener.

Yes, I know he's worth more, but you very rarely get full value in these situations.
Tippett and 19 for Giles and 3? (With Sydney in between).

We're seriously just going around in circles here...

and teams like Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs (for example ;)) will tank for greater picks.

This compensation for FA is stupid at best. Ridiculously amateurish at worst. As it stands at the moment, the formula is something the AFL wing, which is why it's going to take them so long to give the specific picks out. It also means that everyone in the league is virtually penalised, as their picks drop in value each time a FA deal is done. It seems to me, that the team gaining the FA player - pays absolutely NOTHING to the other team for them. Is this not a huge error in the whole system? The compensation MUST be a simple formula based on salary. And the team that is gaining the FA player should have to pay the compensation IMO, not every other bugger!

I dont disagree. The idea of the beneficiary not having to pay something is wrong.

I also am of the opinion that negotiations, such as Tippetts, that result in the player being able to go to the PSD and ends up with the beneficiary paying zip is also wrong. Ive stated earlier that I believe more onus should be placed on the players managers to do a deal that they know can actually happen. If they dont then someone will get screwed. Utilising the PSD as a tool to force a result is simply another way to screw a club. Lets face it. If no deal is done and say we are only offered pick 22 or something stupid like J white we are effectively being forced to accept because the PSD is the next option. There has to be another way rather than being threatened by the PSD option.

I just really hope we are doing whatever it takes to get Toumpas on board.

Even if Tambling is included in a package deal

Perhaps as tradebait, like last year where they used pick 68 or something like that in a trade with us to upgrade a draft pick they actually did use?

I agree though, neglibile.
Or as has been posted previously, give them 19 and take Giles.

Is Jimmy Toumpas going to be this years Brad Ebert?
Only if we are in a position to take him :D
I have heard suggested (on radio somewhere) that GWS may not take B Grundy as expected, that they may take 3 mids with their 3 picks. Grundy may slide to Port at 7
Would we take Grundy if we had pick 3 and Toumpas went at 2?

The Advertriper is reporting Callinan has been upgraded to the senior list on a 1 year contract... . I'm guessing that means Mr Noble has a better idea of whats happening with us trade wise....

I know its not the best leaugue but Mitchell had 42 touches in a half of football in our reserves trust me GWS would trade 3 for him
I'm betting a GWS fan (should such a fabled creature actually exist) would argue otherwise.. just as Sydney & Adelaide fans have been at loggerheads all week.;)

Sydney getting off too lightly here.

Syd lose Mitchell and 22 to GWS
GWS lose pick 3 and Giles to Adelaide
Adel lose Tippett to Syd.

Ah who frickin knows!

Then there is the GHS, Pears rumours.

Dunno how we can fit them in, but i guess we could offload Tambling or Joyce, and re-rookie if not selected elsewhere.
Happy to admit that this is a better alternative than the one I previously posted.

They offered him a pretty good deal to try and secure him as a 17 year old

you'd bloody hope so :p

Except we won't be offloading anyone else given what was said today after Callinan's upgrading. "All other players contracted". Can't imagine anyone wanting to trade for Tambling.

You would hope so or we're ****ed. :(

"A pretty good deal" is not necessarily the same as pick #3...

I'm not saying he's a bad player - I'd still rate him as being worthy of a top-10 draft pick. Just how high in the top-10 is the question.

I just offered as a suggestion on the sydney board

Sydney Tippett
GWS Mitchell 19 22
Adelaide 3, Giles

and got threatened with cards and they genuinelly believe they are getting absolutley reamed...
One Nicky flog even said Tippett is barely worth 22. It baffles the mind the stupidity over there!
